2013 Annual Debate

UK natural environment: evidence-based policy or policy-based evidence?

Introduction

Wildlife and Countryside Link’s Annual Debate provides an exciting opportunity to explore a current issue or emerging theme, with particular emphasis on its impact on society, wildlife and the economy.

Open to Link members and other interested parties, th is year’s debate will explore the relationship between policy formulation and evidence. After the event, guests are welcome to join us for a networking drinks reception, sponsored by the British Ecological Society as part of its Centenary celebrations.

Format

4.00-5.30pm on Wednesday 4 th December

The debate will be chaired by Professor David Macdonald, Director of the Wildlife

Conservation Research Unit, Department of Zoology at Oxford University. Professor

Macdonald will start by inviting each of our experts to address the question: UK natural environment: evidence-based policies or policy-based evidence? Questions and comments will then be invited from the audience.

Expert panel

Our panel of experts comprises:

Dr Mark Avery (Independent environmental expert, former Conservation

Director, RSPB);

Dr Peter Brotherton (Deputy Chief Scientist, Natural England);

Dr Gemma Harper (Deputy Director for Animal & Plant Heath Evidence and

Analysis, and Chief Social Researcher, Defra);

Professor Susan Owens (Professor of Environment and Policy, University of

Cambridge);

Professor Bill Sutherland (Professor of Conservation Biology, University of

Cambridge).

Registration opens from 3.30pm. The debate will run from 4.00pm to 5.30pm and will be followed by a drinks reception sponsored by the British Ecological Society.
