Science Lesson Plans October 7-11 Landform and Oceans – Natural Processes BIG IDEA: Events of nature that cause changes to Earth’s land and oceans are called natural processes Date: Essential Question(s): Standards: Procedures: Assessment: Materials: Vocabulary: Homework: Monday Tuesday Wednesday How can weathering, erosion and deposition work together to affect the Earth’s surface? How can landslides be a destructive force and affect the earth’s surface? How can floods be a destructive force and affect the earth’s surface? Rock Writing Day 2 Test Grade for Science and ELA 5-3.1 Landslides Floods DAY 6 Using their Natural Processes Booklet, students will complete a Rock Writing Assignment. See Rubric for Science See Rubric for Writing Rock Writing Assessment with Science Rubric as guide Day 7 Students will complete the landslide portion of their Natural Processes Booklet. Focus will be on cause and effect. Day 8 Students will complete the floods portion of their Natural Processes Booklet. Focus will be on cause and effect. Teacher Observation Natural Processes Booklet Completion on landslides Natural Processes Booklet Natural Processes Booklet Thursday How can earthquakes and tsunamis be a destructive force and affect the earth’s surface? Earthquakes and Tsunamis How can volcanoes be a constructive force and affect the earth’s surface? Day 10 Students will complete the volcanic eruption portion of their Natural Processes Booklet. Focus will be on cause and effect. Teacher Observation Day 9 Students will complete the earthquake and tsunamis portion of their Natural Processes Booklet. Focus will be on cause and effect. Objectives: The students will explain how natural processes will affect Earth’s oceans and lands in constructive and destructive ways. The students will explain how weathering, erosion, and deposition affect Earth’s surface. The students will explain how landslides affect Earth’s surface. The students will explain how volcanic eruptions affect Earth’s surface. The students will explain how earthquakes affect Earth’s surface. The students will explain how floods affect Earth’s surface. Vocabulary: Chemical Weathering Constructive Delta Deposition Destructive Dune Earthquakes Erosion Fault Floods Gravity Landslides Natural Processes Physical Weathering Sediments Tsunami Volcanic Eruptions Volcanic Island Weathering Day 1 – Constructive & Destructive Forces Answer questions 1-4 on Natural Processes Booklet independently. Use Natural Processes Prezi to discuss constructive and destructive forces that shape Earth. Day 2 – Weathering Answer questions 5-7 on Natural Processes Booklet Sheet independently. Use Natural Processes Prezi to discuss chemical and physical weathering and the effects it has on Earth’s surfaces. Use pages 186-187 in the science text book for additional information. Day 3 – Erosion Answer questions 8-9 on Natural Processes Booklet independently. Use Natural Processes Prezi to discuss erosion and the effects it has on Earth’s surfaces. Use pages 188-189 in the science text book for additional information. Day 4 – Deposition Answer questions 10-11 on Natural Processes Booklet Sheet independently. Use Natural Processes Prezi to discuss deposition and the effects it has on Earth’s surfaces. Day 5 & 6 – Rock Writing Students will write a narrative about a rock as it is weathered, eroded, and deposited. Students will demonstrate an understanding of weathering, erosion, and deposition by providing definitions and examples in their writing. Writings will be scored using a provided rubric. This will count as a major test grade. Day 7 – Landslides Complete landslides section on Natural Processes Booklet independently. Use Natural Processes Prezi to discuss landslides causes and effects. Use Landslides video to discuss landslides causes and effects. http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/search/assetDetail.cfm?guidAssetID=860CF461-78AD-4998-96A6A75E49E6F4A8 Use support document to discuss landslides causes and effects. Day 8 – Floods Complete floods section on Natural Processes Booklet independently. Use Natural Processes Prezi to discuss floods causes and effects. Use floods video to discuss floods causes and effects. http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/search/assetDetail.cfm?guidAssetID=860CF461-78AD-499896A6-A75E49E6F4A8 Use support document to discuss floods causes and effects. Day 9 – Earthquakes & Tsunamis Complete earthquakes and tsunamis section on Natural Processes Booklet independently. Use Natural Processes Prezi to discuss earthquakes and tsunamis causes and effects. Use earthquakes and tsunamis video to discuss earthquakes and tsunamis causes and effects. http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/search/assetDetail.cfm?guidAssetID=989F6A6A-66FD-4AE1-9378C96F47A387C3 Use support document to discuss earthquakes and tsunamis causes and effects. Day 10 – Volcanic Eruptions Complete volcanic eruptions section on Natural Processes Booklet independently. Use Natural Processes Prezi to discuss volcanic eruptions causes and effects. Use volcanic eruptions video to discuss volcanic eruptions causes and effects. http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/search/assetDetail.cfm?guidAssetID=989F6A6A-66FD-4AE19378-C96F47A387C3 http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/search/assetDetail.cfm?guidAssetID=8565EFBE-6F25-42BFA60C-0BEA7F34ADCA Use support document to discuss volcanic eruptions causes and effects. Day 11 & 12 – Chart Sequencing Review Groups (or individuals) will be given cards with descriptions of major natural processes (floods, earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions) and will have to categorize them as weathering, erosion, or deposition, along with sequence them in the correct order. Students will then choose one row of the cart to go into more detail about as a review for the test. Day 13 – Test
