Expectations for Educational Assistant III Sp Ed Positions Functional Academics Elementary We are a team and plan on making this school year a positive place to work and learn. The following are guidelines to help support us all as we work together this year. Come to school everyday with a positive attitude. Be prepared for a productive day with the students and your co-workers. Make your attendance a priority. When a member of the instructional team is absent, things don’t run as smoothly as they do when we are all here. Please arrive on time and be ready to work at 7:15. Call the classroom and let us know if an emergency arises and you are running late. Picking up Starbucks and Krispy Kreme does not constitute an emergency! If you are ill, call in to Subfinder as soon as possible. Be sure to call the classroom teacher and give him/her a “heads up” that you will be out. This will ensure alternate plans are put into place if a sub does not pick up the job. Try to make appointments (Dr., Dentist, hair or nails, etc.) after your scheduled hours(3:15 p.m.) or at the beginning or end of the day if you want to take only a half day absence. (7:15-11:15 a.m. OR 11:15-3:15p.m.) Call the absence in to Subfinder as soon as you know you will be out to increase the chances of having a reliable sub in the classroom. Notify the classroom teacher as soon as you know you will be absent and let him/her know who your sub will be while you are out. Please use the campus preferred sub list when at all possible for any absences. Our students respond better to familiar faces and respond more positively to routine and consistent “caregivers”. Educational Assistants will be assigned lunch duty with our students. Position yourself in strategic locations to assist the students at lunch. You are there to monitor and aide our students and should be available to them when needed. Lunch time is also a great opportunity for you to facilitate communication between our students and their non-disabled peers. You will be scheduled a duty free 30 minute lunch everyday. Take care of personal telephone calls, running errands, visiting with staff members, etc. during your lunch period. You will be expected to be ready to go at your assigned duty immediately following your lunch. If you need to use the restroom during the day other than at your lunch time, be sure the students you are assigned to are “covered” by another adult in the classroom. If you must leave the classroom, make eye contact with another adult in the room and let them know you are leaving and where you are going. DO NOT ever leave students unattended in any classroom. Please refer to the RRISD Acceptable Use Policy when using school computers. You will have specific times when district e-mail can be checked during the day. Please do not check e-mail when you are assigned to work with students. Keep all conversations, when in the presences of students, on the student and positive. All adult conversations can occur after the children have left or are out of the room. Share your comments about the children with the teacher privately, not in front of them. When we say, “(Student’s name) won’t do anything I ask him to do today.” It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and the student will live up to your expectations. Keep the lines of communication open with all the working adults in your classroom. This is a team and we want to treat each other respectfully. If there is an issue, get it cleared up promptly, after the students leave. Don’t let it fester and grow. Go to the person the issue involves first. If you can not resolve the issue, please follow the chain of command. As a team we need to work together. If you see something that needs to be done, step in to assist if you are available. There may be times that you will be asked to complete, change, finish a task or assist with behavior issues. We appreciate you stepping up without a negative reaction to help your team members out. You will be scheduled to work with small groups throughout the day on specific skills. Please become familiar with student IEPs so you can accurately document skill progress. Please become familiar with student BIPs so you can appropriately address student behavior. At various times during the day you will be supporting students while at group activities. You will be instrumental to student learning, assisting students while keeping them on task and involved in the lesson. Consistency with behavior guidelines/rules is the key to success with our students. “Say what you mean and mean what you say.” Be careful when setting limits and giving choices to the acting out student. Make sure the consequence fits the behavior and is enforceable. Remember your CPI training! All parent concerns should be directed to the teacher for him/her to address with the parent. Please sign below to indicate you have read and understand these guidelines. Educational Assistant__________________________________ Date_____________
