Product Design is a enormously satisfying subject. You have an idea and with the use of tools,
materials or computers it comes to life. Product Design offers a unique opportunity for students to
identify and solve real problems by designing and making a range of products.
By studying this course, students will benefit from the many transferable skills in the study of this
subject which will be highly prized by any university; it develops candidates’ organisational skills and
their capacity for imaginative, innovative thinking, creativity and independence.
This syllabus allows students to work in a wide range of contexts relating to their personal interests.
Projects can be tailored to many design fields such as designer maker, industrial designer, graphic
designer, fashion designer, jewellery designer, interior designer and architect to name a few; the

What Will You Study?
IMPORTANT NOTE: This is our current offer which is subject to change
AS Units
Unit 1 Exam
2 hours – 50% of the total marks and 25% of the total A level marks. This question paper
covers three main topic areas; 1) Materials, Components and Application. 2) Hand and
Commercial Processing. 3) Design, Environment and Ergonomics. Candidates will
answer three from a choice of six questions.
Unit 2 Coursework
Approx 50 hours – 50% of the AS marks and 25% of the total A Level marks. This unit
consists of a design portfolio and a manufactured outcome. Coursework may take a
number of forms: a single design and make project, two smaller projects and /or a
portfolio of work
A2 Units
Unit 3 Exam
2 hours – 25% of the total A Level marks. This question paper covers three main topic
areas; 1) Design and Manufacture 2) Design and Market Influences 3) Processes and
Manufacture Candidates will answer three from a choice of six questions.
Unit 4 Coursework
Approx 60 hours – 25% of the total A Level marks. This unit consists of a design portfolio
and a manufactured outcome. Candidates submit a single, substantial designing and
making project of their own choice.
Possible Career Path?
Product Design could take you into a number of exciting career paths. Of course there is product or
automotive design. But what about computer generated cartoons? Or maybe CAD for industry
appeals to you more? This course could take you into architecture, fashion design, interior design,
teaching, manufacturing, apprenticeships, advertising or engineering. Complimentary A ‘level
courses are any of the Arts, Media, Maths and Sciences.
