UTA Retirees Club Minutes, Tuesday, May 13, 2014 Retirees met in Room 102B of the Maverick Activity Center. Beginning at 10am a meet & greet with refreshments was enjoyed. Frank Gault began the meeting by explaining that the scheduled program on volunteerism was cancelled due to a loss of funding for the agency that was to provide the speaker. Durl Rather, Associate Director for Campus Recreation, provided the format for the alternate program. ANNOUNCEMENTS Barbara Peet who volunteers at the Arlington Museum of Art announced the current exhibit: Ansel Adams Masterworks. She encouraged everyone to attend. The tickets are $5 for seniors. Earl Patrick announced that Don Cantwell passed away on May 11, 2014. Earl also announced the slate of officers for 2014-2015: Rita Thompson, president; Larry Barcroft, vice-president for membership; Bob Wegner, vice-president for programs; Joyce Palmer, treasurer; Rosanne Minyard, secretary; and Harley Courtney, Frank Gault and Gerry Frantz, program committee. Midge Holiday moved that the slate be accepted by acclimation; Wanda Slinkard seconded the motion; the slate of officers was accepted. Frank Gault announced that the officers would be installed at the June 10, 2014, meeting. That meeting will also include a discussion of retiree insurance benefits for next year by HR. June 7th will be the dinner honoring new retirees. Invitations have been mailed out; be sure to RSVP. PROGRAM Frank introduced Blair E. Schuyler, Coordinator – MAC Membership Services. Blair has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska and a Masters from Clemson. Using slides, Blair discussed “What is the MAC and What Does it Offer?” He handed out his card and a pocket guide to Campus Recreation. The MAC offers informal recreation, fitness & wellness, intramural sports (over 30 teams), aquatics, sports clubs that compete with other universities, spirit groups (cheerleaders, wranglers, dance team, school mascot Blaze), and adaptive recreation (sports for wheelchair and visually impaired students). The MAC offers many amenities including two indoor tracks, exercise machines, two pools, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, racquetball, tennis and volleyball courts, equipment check-out, climbing wall, locker rooms, computer lab and the Market at the MAC. Fitness and wellness programs include personal trainers and fitness testing, group exercise, Food for Thought (a brown bag series providing wellness education), massage therapy, nutritionist, and non-credit classes such as CPR. The MAC also offers many special events such as bed races, World Heart Day Cyclotron, Polar Bear Plunge, and Zumbathon (to raise money for Safe Haven). He discussed the membership fees ($20 per month for retirees) and answered questions. At the end, all who wanted went for a short tour of the MAC facilities. Submitted by Rosanne Minyard, secretary
