Workshop Description
Active Leakage Control is a critical component in Water Loss Management. While utilities can make
significant gains through top-down analysis of consumption, every utility should be proactively engaged in
some form of coordinated and prioritized leak detection program, in order to maximize real loss savings.
This hands-on, one day workshop will support water utility operators in meeting their utility’s water loss
management targets by teaching them to locate unreported leakage in their systems through use of a
range of acoustic leak detection equipment and methods. Participants will learn to implement a leak
detection strategy that best fits their utility’s budget, staff experience and resources and provides them an
understanding of how leak detection fits into the overall Water Loss Management spectrum.
**Pre-requisite is prior attendance at a Columbia Basin Trust sponsored Water Loss Management
workshop in either 2012 or 2013.
Participants MUST bring:

For leak detection display and field work:
o Any utility owned acoustic leak detection equipment, if available (e.g.: listening devices, data
loggers, etc…).
o Available reports on acoustic leak detection efforts to date.
o Leak repair information: how notified, average time to locate, average time to repair.

For the field work portion:
o PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): e.g.: vest, steel-toed boots, gloves, weatherappropriate outdoor gear
o Any utility owned acoustic leak detection equipment, if available.

For summary and next steps:
o related budget/program information on leak detection
o proposed or preferred future leak detection priorities
