A/C STOP LEAK (SEALER)
Nowhere is the saying “Buyer Beware” more important than air conditioner sealer or stop leak products. If
you use sealers in your system, you should be prepared to replace Every Part in that system the next time it is
opened or serviced.
Many sealers work on the premise that the A/C system is a sealed system, meaning no air or moisture is in the
system. The sealer goes into the system and if it leaks to the outside atmosphere where it comes in contact
with air & moisture it activates and it either becomes hard and solidifies to plug the leak or it becomes an
elasto-metric, like rubber cement, to slow the leak.
The problem is that if someone didn’t evacuate the system completely and get all of the air out or the system
develops a leak and it gets opened to have service done it will be exposed to the elements that activate the
sealer. When that happens, the sealer turns hard like sand particles or it gets rubbery and it will seize the
compressor & restrict the valves. Do yourself and the next person that services the system a huge favor, and
Don’t Use Sealers. It may not be evident to the service facility when they open the system that it actually has
sealer in it, since some take a while to activate.
Thousands of dollars in damage to the shops recovery equipment may be caused by the sealer and many
times the repair will fail due to the sealer activating after the system is put back together. To help the shop
properly service your vehicle & deliver a successful repair be sure to let them know if sealer has been added.
If you do add refrigerant to your system add ONLY pure refrigerant. Be sure to read the label on the
refrigerant can & choose one without enhancers, sealants, or additives. Not all sealers are bad, but there is no
regulation of them and the manufacturers do not tell you on the container what they are.
We have pure refrigerant in cans for sale to the customers that want to do it yourself at competitive prices.
Please remember that more is not better.
One final tip- refrigerant does not go bad or get used up. If your system is low you have a leak. The safest and
most cost effective repair is to have the leak fixed. Adding refrigerant to a system is like putting air in a tire
with a nail in it. It will leak out again unless you fix the leak.
