BULL Time Q and A

Concern or Question Potential Answer

What will the new day schedule look like?

What is the plan for monitoring all the students during Bull Time?

The schedule will be as follows:

1 st : 7:15-8:33 (78 minutes)

2 nd : 8:38-10:05 (78 min. + 9 extra min. for announcements = 87)

3 rd : 10:10-11:28 (78 minutes)

BULL A: 11:33-12:10 (37 minutes)

BULL B: 12:15-12:52 (37 minutes)

4 th : 12:57-2:15 (78 minutes)

A very deliberate and detailed plan on supervision has been created. Every staff member will serve on a support station (duty) a minimum of 2/10 blocks each week. We have placed these stations at particular locations in the building, based on where tutorials are being held, to ensure safe traffic flow, etc. There will be certain areas of the building that will be closed off during Bull Time, so that we can adequately supervise all of our students. We will also be utilizing the gym, auditorium, commons area, as well as select areas outside (with assigned faculty supervision) in order to help spread out the number of students more evenly. In addition, there will be administrators as well as a couple of Bull Time task force members who will be “roaming” constantly during both Bull Time blocks.

Can they go to multiple events in one Bull Time or will they be required to make ONE choice for each Bull Time session?

Students will follow a schedule that they create for themselves at the beginning of the week. Once a student decides upon the Bull Time activity that they will be attending, we are highly encouraging them to remain in that activity the entire length of each Bull Time block. If they are assigned a tutorial, they report directly to that room and stay there until the block is over. The students will be given 5 minutes to transition between Block A and Block B. Students may change their activities every day or week, depending on how well they are performing in their classes, how often their clubs meet, etc.

Can the cafeteria accommodate all kids coming in at once?

Obviously, we cannot allow all 1,600 of our students into the cafeteria at one time.

We are holding different departmental tutorials and club meetings during each of the Bull Time blocks, in an effort to split up the numbers of students who will be eating lunch. Additionally, we will be adding a mobile cart in the commons area, which will feature “grab and go” types of food offered by the cafeteria such as salads and wraps. We will also be encouraging students to pack their own lunches and feel free to eat in a variety of places throughout the building, such as classrooms, commons, and even certain outside areas.

Will high school teachers still have opportunities for duty free lunch?

Yes, all teachers will have at least one Bull Time block in which to eat lunch. (duty free) In fact, teachers and students will gain 15 minutes from our current lunch schedule in which to eat their lunch. Teachers are only required to be on their support stations (duty) 2/10 Bull Time blocks per week. Teachers may choose to hold club meetings, small tutorial sessions, open their classroom, etc. during their other Bull Time blocks.

Since this changes instructional time, will this effect Snow Day make-up in the future? Or does this take away some of that “built-in extra instructional time” we’ve heard so much about over these past snow days?

Although the schedule has been altered to accommodate Bull Time, instructional time remains within state guidelines for hours of instruction requirements.

Additionally, the majority of Bull Time will also be used for instructional time in the form of re-looping, re-teaching, review, and small group tutorials, so Bull Time will actually give most students more instructional time.

Will teachers still offer before/after school help or will

Teachers are expected to hold a minimum of two tutorial sessions per week during Bull Time. It is anticipated that some teachers will offer more than that.

Bull Time be in exchange for that?

If you are struggling in your classes you will need to get help… Define struggling.

Who will be required to use

Bulltime to get help?

Most teachers will be able to effectively reach the lower performing students and enrich our higher performing students during Bull Time. However, after school sessions can be scheduled if there is additional need.

We are wary of creating a stricter rule to “define struggling,” since struggling may look different depending on the class, student, and teacher. PLCs and departments will determine their own criteria for struggling, which will be based on overall course grades as well as individual test/quiz grades. Other students who have a higher grade than that may choose to attend tutorial sessions. Our goal is for all students to improve their learning and achievement.

They can choose between

Bull Lunch A or Bull Lunch B.

Do kids get to decide each day or will they decide for an entire semester?

Students will make the decision on which lunch to eat daily. It will largely depend on whether they have any assigned tutorials, club meetings, or other activities.

Are students required to attend a certain number of tutorials?

What if I need to check my student out of school during

Bull time?

Any tutorial that is assigned by a teacher is required. If students do not attend, they will receive consequences for skipping class.

Students will be in various locations throughout the buiding; therefore, we will need parents to communicate with their students via text (during Bull Time only) if they need to check them out. Students must still follow all existing check in/check out procedures through the attendance office.
