ABOUT ME
I have several years’ experience leading the development of national policy and practice in adult
education, particularly in relation to adult literacy and numeracy. My strengths are in strategic
planning; teaching and training; building networks; facilitation; developing and delivering qualifications
and training; and writing in multiple formats, including for the internet. I have a particular subject
interest in the development of numeracy and financial capability skills for people over the age of 16.
MY EXPERIENCE
Strategic:






Co-wrote and developed Scotland’s ten-year adult literacy and numeracy strategy
Led the strategic implementation of the strategy for the Scottish Government
Led the evaluation of a vocational qualification pilot for NHS Education for Scotland
Produced guidance on evaluating of adult learning
Wrote an action plan for strengthening adult numeracy policy, access and practice and in Ireland
Chaired Scotland’s advisory group for the Lloyds-funded Money for Life project
Professional development and networking:
 Co-ordinated a multi-partner Leonardo-funded European project to develop training on delivering
mathematics in vocational settings
 Led the development of Scotland’s first training framework for the adult literacy and numeracy
workforce
 Created and rolled out qualifications and training, including the Professional Development Award
(PDA): Tutoring Adult Literacies and the PDA: Supporting Adult Literacies Learning
 Built successful practitioner networks and online communities of practice
 Led action learning research into the teaching of numeracy to adults in Ireland
 Developed guidance on how third sector organisations can evidence the impact of their projects
Educational development:
 Managed the development of educational projects and resources, including the 2011 Census
Learning Pack
 Project managed the building of online tools and websites, including Financial Learning Online (FLO)
Scotland
 Wrote unit assessment support packs for Scottish Qualifications Authority in numeracy and literacy
 Evaluated workplace learning programmes for NHS Education for Scotland
 Managed a community learning centre with over 200 students
Teaching:
 Taught adult learners in community and college settings for six years
 Taught English in a vocational institute in Finland for four months

 Planned, delivered and assessed sessions courses in adult literacy and numeracy
 Wrote, adapted, trialled and evaluated learning materials
 Peer-reviewed the quality of colleagues’ teaching
Writing and research:

Wrote annual reports on the progress of the national strategy
Wrote web materials for Ireland’s National Adult Literacy Agency
Wrote evaluative reports on events for the Goodison Group in Scotland
Published articles in professional and trade journals
Wrote awareness-raising material and guidance for micro-sites of NHS Education Scotland
Wrote ministerial briefings and speeches for policy launches and other events
Co-ordinated educational research projects, including European-funded activity
Researched and wrote case studies in adult learning
Produced a comparative research report on financial literacy in England, Ireland and Scotland for
the German Institute of Adult Education
