Child Development/Nursery School Family & Consumer Sciences Dept. Ms. Back rback@crsd.org Welcome to Child Development/Nursery School This career-oriented course provides an opportunity for students interested in future careers involving children. Emphasis is placed on the study of the preschool-aged child. Students will actively set up and be responsible for an on-site preschool laboratory right here at North. Students will plan and prepare learning centers, write lesson plans, present those lessons to the children, complete observations of the children, write case studies, create a portfolio, and participate in additional activities for the children. We will learn all about children and have a ton of fun!! Student Goals: To study the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of children. To learn how to interact with and teach preschool-age children. To learn how to write and present preschool lessons. To create a professional-quality portfolio of your work. To observe children and complete a case study. To have fun while learning!! Supplies: Students will have classroom bins in which to keep their supplies. o Loose-leaf lined paper. The kind that is already hole-punched is a good choice. o Sharpened pencil or a pen: Please be prepared for class each day!! o 1” 3-ring binder: This will be used for the portfolio. o As needed: students will need various art supplies for their portfolio, and for their turn during supervisory-day lessons for the children. These dates will be determined later. Missed Assignments: Missed assignments, including labs, homework, quizzes, tests, etc. must made up within one week upon return to school following your excused absence, unless other arrangements are made with me. I am available most days after school, so please schedule a time to make up missed work. You can also reach me by e-mail. Very important!!!! If you are scheduled to present a lesson to the children and are sick or cannot be present that day, you must let me know as soon as possible!!! Remember---You are the teacher for that day, and have a responsibility for the day’s activities. The children are depending on you! Resources: There are many idea and reference books geared to preschool right here in our classroom. You do not have to create all of your own lesson ideas---the key is to be resourceful, enthusiastic, and caring!! Assessments and Attendance: Students must conduct themselves in accordance with all rules in their student handbooks. In addition, students must arrive on time to every class with needed materials and classwork. Grading is based on class participation and performance, completion of assignments and projects, and test scores, including quizzes, mid-term and final exam. Students may also be assessed in other ways including guided reading activities, research, cooperative learning projects, and presentations. Because this is a laboratory course and much of the work is done in class, attendance is very important. Absences of 10 or more days in a semester can result in the withholding of credit for the course. Nursery School Schedule: The first day of Nursery School will be Tuesday, September 29, 2015. Nursery school hours are 8:50 – 10:25. The children will be here every Day 1 (except for those that fall on Mondays).
