Recycling Metals - Homework
Your task for this piece of homework is to complete the following:
1. Complete a piece of research (make sure you record in your work where you sourced
it) on the pros and cons of recycling. You may use some of the key points below to
guide your research.
2. Pick a task below based on your target grade and complete an extended piece of
writing using the proposed sentence starters if you need them.
 Sustainability is about conserving the environment and ensuring that there are
natural resources left for future generations.
 Environmental issues are any issues that affect the air, land or water.
 Economic issues are any issues that affect the amount of money something costs or
how much money something provides for a company/local area/government.
 The extraction of metals from their ores is an expensive process as it involves the
mining of the ore and the extraction, which requires a lot of energy.
 When metals are recycled they have to be sorted and cleaned before they are
processed. They get melted down and usually rolled into sheets before being sold.
New metals do not need to be extracted from their ores.
Grade C:
Summarise reasons for recycling metals. You should provide as many reasons as possible and you should
go into as much detail about each one as possible.
E.g. One reason for recycling metals is to reduce the amount of waste that is generated. This would
reduce the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of, therefore reducing the number of landfills
required, and reduce the need to extract more metals from their ores.
Grade B:
Establish reasons for recycling metals and categorise these as either environmental or economic. You
should provide as many reasons as possible and you should go into as much detail about each one as
possible.

and an economic issue as it would have a positive effect on the environment by reducing land pollution

sustainability.
E.g. One advantage of recycling metals is that smaller amounts of metals need to be extracted from
their ores. This is an economic advantage as it is cheaper to process and recycle metals than it is to mine
ores and extract the metals from them. It also improves sustainability because it leaves more ores for
future generations.
