The Husky Paws Newsletter Ann K. Heiman Elementary School - 348-2400 Anne Ramírez, Principal Ricky Bucher, Assistant Principal December 4, 2014 Attendance Our attendance has been decreasing after a strong start to the year. Our attendance percentage in the last 2 weeks is down significantly. We recognize this is flu season and we have had lots of bugs going around. We have been promoting healthy hand washing and hygiene to help. Also remember that starting young, having the routine of coming to school every day establishes good habits for the future! To ensure that all students learn all they can, everyone needs to come to school on time every day. Our first bell rings at 8:20 AM and the learning doesn’t stop until 3:45 PM (2:15 PM on Mondays). It is critical that students are at school on time and stay the entire day; this way if they really need to miss for illness or an emergency, the overall attendance is still within the acceptable limits. Students who arrive late and are picked up early miss learning time that cannot be made up. PTO & Parent News! Did you know that PTO purchased about $750 worth of books for our “Battle of the Books” program. Wow thanks PTO! PTO would like to invite as many parents as possible to attend the School SAC meeting on Tuesday Dec 9th at 5 pm in the library. SAC is the Accountability Committee that meets to help guide our school. Spelling Bee Students at Ann K Heiman will have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps Spelling Bee this year. A school- wide written bee will be held in January, with an opportunity for the top 30 spellers to participate in an oral bee to select a school winner. The school winner will be invited to go to the state spelling bee that will be held in Denver on March 14. Students are practicing spelling in their classrooms, but if you would like additional words to study at home, please contact debutherus@greeleyschools.org and they can be sent to you. Happy Spelling! Open Enrollment Open enrollment is the process in which families who live outside of the school’s attendance area are allowed to request to attend any district school. The window for open enrollment requests for the 2015-16 school year begins on Monday, November 3, 2014 and closes at the end of the school day on Thursday, December 18, 2014. The open enrollment application form will be available at every school office, at the district office (1029 9th Ave.) and on the district website at www.greeleyschools.org under the “parents” tab. Completed applications may be submitted at the district main office, at your child’s current school or at the school you are requesting your child to attend in the 2015-16 school year. Students who are presently attending a school under open enrollment or transfer will automatically be enrolled in the school they are presently attending. For more information about open enrollment, please consult the district website or call 348-6265. Cold Weather Tips Put your child’s name in coats, jackets, gloves/mittens, hats, etc. Dress in layers and have warm options. For younger students, practice zipping, tying, buckling, etc… Send an extra pair of shoes if students wear boots. It’s a long day when they are trudging around in heavy/hot boots. Teach kids how to properly wash hands to reduce germs during flu seasons. Avoid the sharing of hats and coats Check the lost and found for lost items. It is an ever growing pile. Be sure to go over drop off and pick up plan with students to avoid having them wait too long in the cold weather. The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is a set of assessments that measure whether students are on track to be successful in college and their careers. These high quality, computer-based K–12 assessments in Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy give teachers, schools, students, and parents better information whether students are on track in their learning, for success after high school, and tools to help teachers customize learning to meet student needs. For more info on PARRC visit: http://www.parcconline.org/about-parcc As a school, we are required by the state to have at least 98% participation but of course we expect 100% of our kids to participate and show what they know! Please mark the above dates in your calendar so you can make sure to plan accordingly with trips and appointments. Summit After-School classes Summit After School classes will start again on January 13, 2015 at which time we will also be accepting new students into the program. For questions please contact. These safety concerns mostly stem from the limited parking around the west side of the school with parents and children walking back and forth across Palermo Ave. Please keep in mind for the safety of the children please use the designated cross walks and follow the No Parking Zone. The Evans Police department has asked us to remind families that fines for parking in no parking zones, bus loading zones, within 5 feet of a driveway and other parking violations start at $20.
