Genie in Your Genes Project
Question: How do human genomic variations impact human
health and society at large?
Challenge: Explore the phenomenon of human genetic variation. Select a
variation of interest. Research the cause or nature of the variation. Correlate the
variation with a human phenotype/characteristic. Discuss:
a. The frequency of the variation.
b. The high-risk (frequency) human group.
c. The mechanism of action of the genetic variant. How does the variant result in the
altered phenotype?
d. The consequences of the variation (cellular, organismal, and societal levels).
e. Existing and/or potential therapies (alterations); include success rate.
f. Societal ramifications/consequences of the variation (legal, economic, political, ethical)
g. Representation of this variation in society; identify movies, TV shows, telethons, books,
newscasts, etc. related to the variation.
Task: Each member of the group must participate equally in the following:
a. An oral presentation lasting NO MORE than 3 minutes. Practice so that your
presentation fulfills all requirements within the allotted time.
b. The presentation MUST include a complete mini-folder to be hung within the school.
The presentation should also include supporting audio-visuals (ppt slides, films, websites, etc.)
c. Provide suggested sources for students to explore; relate to movies, TV shows,
telethons, books, newscasts, etc.
d. The creation of at least 5 questions (Multiple choice or short answer) specific to your
presentation to be incorporated into a general class quiz.
e. A self-evaluation/reflection of your project.
Extra credit:
By Monday May 31 – Watch “Judgment day” (Nova special). Do a synopsis with key points, arguments,
etc. Then, write a paragraph on your personal position on this issue. Actually, there are 2 issues to
evaluate: 1. Explain your explanation of the history of life on our planet 2. What explanation(s) should
be presented in a SCIENCE class (and why)?
