Greetings Alpharetta High School Students and Parents:
Welcome to the 2012 - 2013 school year where we will continue to work together to fulfill our
school’s mission of being Nationally Recognized in Academics, Arts, Athletics and Service to the
community. I trust that you and your family have enjoyed a fun-filled summer together with a
balance of relaxation, rejuvenation and at least a little academic rigor – perhaps studying for SATs,
completing Advanced Placement summer assignments, filling out college applications or maybe
just reading leisurely by the pool.
Believe it or not, school is only one month away! If you have summer assignments to complete,
students, it would be wise to get started right away. Please understand that schedules will not be
allowed to be changed because of an incomplete summer assignment.
Please join me in welcoming Mr. Charles Chester to our administrative team. Mr. Chester comes
to us from Woodland Middle School in Fulton County, where he most recently served as an
Administrative Assistant. He has also served as the 8th Grade Level Chairperson and the Math
Area Content Leader. He brings with him both teaching and administrative experiences at both the
high school and middle school levels. His educational background includes degrees from Albany
State University, Columbus State University, and Kennesaw State University, where he earned a
B.A. In Mathematics (ASU), a Master's Degree in Mathematics Education (CSU), and a Master’s
Degree in Educational Leadership (KSU). We look forward to Mr. Chester joining our school
community; I encourage you to reach out to him over the next several weeks with a big Alpharetta
Raider welcome at chesterc@fultonschools.org
For now, I want to ensure that you save the date for INFORMATION DAY on Wednesday,
August 8, 2012. During Information Day students will have an opportunity to receive their
updated class schedule, meet teachers, learn about clubs and activities, pay fees, turn in required
affidavits, and join our fabulous PTSA. We will be holding a special Freshman & New Student
Orientation from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in the gymnasium. Freshman Information Day will
continue from 9:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the main building. Sophomore, Junior and Senior
Information Day will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Please note that the building will be
closed between 12:00 and 1:00 for our teachers to have lunch and prepare for our upperclassmen.
Also, please note that neither textbooks nor lockers will be distributed on Information Day.
Lockers may be purchased through advisement during the first week of school, and textbooks will
be distributed through individual classrooms.
I am excited to share with you all that AHS has an updated website for the 2012-2013 school year.
Our new web address is http://school.fultonschools.org/hs/alpharetta. Please make a note of this
change for your records. Based on feedback from students and parents, one of our major goals this
year will be for all of our teachers to have a web page linked on our website where students and
parents will be able to easily access teacher information, course syllabi, weekly assignments,
homework and due dates. Our teachers will be working on developing their web pages during our
pre-planning days in August, so stay tuned for this improved communication feature for our
school. I know this will become a positive way to ensure our students and parents stay informed
regarding the teaching and learning that occurs in our classrooms each day.
Also, please save the date of October 6, 2012 for our first annual Day of Glorious Living, a
school wide service project being sponsored by the Alpharetta High School Foundation
(AHSF). The AHS Foundation’s goal is to flood our campus with student and parent
volunteers from many of our clubs and athletic teams in a day of service, campus
beautification and facility improvement. Find out more information regarding this schoolwide service project and the Foundation’s other important contributions to our school’s
mission when you visit the school on Information Day. Please be sure to stop by the
Foundation table to learn more and get involved.
Before I close this letter, I want to share information with you regarding one of our beloved
Assistant Principals, Mrs. Clair Greenaway. Last year, Mrs. Greenaway was diagnosed with
Primary Myelofibrosis, a bone marrow disorder. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy
and will receive a bone marrow transplant this month from her older sister who, fortunately, is
a 100% match. Mrs. Greenaway will take time to recover at home and rebuild her immune
system. While we will miss her and her big smile tremendously during first semester, we do
expect Mrs. Greenaway to make a full recovery and return to work in January. I invite you to
send well wishes and words of inspiration to Mrs. Greenaway at
greenawayc@fultonschools.org or 5990 James Rd. Austell, GA 30168. I will keep our school
community posted regarding Mrs. Greenaway’s recovery.
Raider families, I look forward to greeting both students and parents on Information Day and
throughout the school year. Together, we will ensure another year of excellence for Alpharetta
High School. Please note that our school hours will be slightly different for the 2012-2013 school
year. The school day will begin at 8:25 a.m. and end at 3:35 p.m. So, students, get those extra
hours of sleep during these remaining weeks of summer so you will get to school on time each day
next year.
See you in a few weeks! Go Raiders!
Sincerely,
Shannon N. Kersey
