Graduate Emma lands her dream internship
Student: Emma Fish
Employer: Energy and Utility Skills Group
Since Emma graduated from the University of Bournemouth with a BA (Hons) in Roman
Archaeology, she has been trying to pursue a career in PR but unfortunately due to her limited
experience, she had been unable to secure a role in the industry.
Following a temporary marketing role, Emma made a speculative
application to the EU Skills Group for some unpaid work experience
to assist her in her search for a career in PR. Emma spent four weeks
supporting both the Human Resources and Marketing and
Communications teams within employee communications and
external marketing and communications, including social media and
PR. During her work experience, Emma continued to apply for
opportunities within PR and as part of her placement, she was
provided with support from HR colleagues to help her enhance her
CV and interview skills so that she could improve her chances of
success in landing a job.
A few weeks after completion of her Internship at the EU Skills
Group, Emma was delighted to receive the news that she had
secured a six month Internship at One Chocolate Communications,
an award-winning PR and digital marketing agency in London.
Emma says, “I’m really excited to get started. My Internship is with an amazing agency who
believe in training their Interns up to an Account Executive level which is really important when
looking for my next step after the Internship finishes.
I will always remember my time at EU Skills with fondness as I enjoyed it a great deal. My time at
EU Skills helped me to gain valuable office experience as well as improve and develop my writing
skills, something that I was not confident about. My Internship taught me a lot and Susie was
great in helping me with my CV and with interviews, as well as helping me to get the basics of
communications which I believe have helped with getting this Internship.”
Commenting on Emma’s Internship, Susie Thomas, Employee Communications Manager said,
“I’m delighted that Emma has found an Internship in PR. I know first-hand how tricky it can be to
get into an industry without relevant work experience. When Emma approached us, I felt that as
an organisation passionate about helping young people into work, we should try to help Emma
and I’m so glad that we did! It’s great that the experience that we provided has helped to build her
confidence and secure a job in an industry she’s passionate about.”
