Year 3 - Term 4 Overview 2014 This is a term overview for the teaching and learning for each subject in Year 3 for Term 4. KLA Outcome Description Unit Outline English EN2-1A communicates in a range of informal and formal contexts by adopting a range of roles in group, classroom, school and community contexts. The Year 3 English program is based on the following text: “A Day to Remember” by Jackie French and various other poems relating to Remembrance Day and Anzac Day. EN2-2A plans, composes and reviews a range of texts that are more demanding in terms of topic, audience and language. EN2-3A uses effective handwriting and publishes texts using digital technologies. EN2-4A uses an increasing range of skills, strategies and knowledge to fluently read, view and comprehend a range of texts on increasingly challenging topics in different media and technologies. EN2-5A uses a range of strategies, including knowledge of letter–sound correspondences and common letter patterns, to spell familiar and some unfamiliar words. EN26B identifies the effect of purpose and audience on spoken texts, distinguishes between different forms of English and identifies organisational patterns and features. EN2-7B identifies and uses language forms and features in their own writing appropriate to a range of purposes, audiences and contexts. EN2-8B identifies and compares different kinds of texts when reading and viewing and shows an understanding of purpose, audience and subject matter. A Day to Remember by Jackie French Students will be looking at the various language features and grammatical structures from these texts and using them in their own writing. This includes use of commas, plurals, tense and common nouns. Students will be working on oral and written comprehension tasks based upon the texts being studied. Students will read and document the important elements of the book, particularly the ANZAC soldiers, nurses, army officials etc. Their experiences and challenges during war are discussed. Students will compare how life is different during times of peace and war, and how war affects people. Students will begin to understand the significance of some of the symbols that relate to the commemoration of ANZAC Day, including the poppy flowers that grew in the Belgian fields during and after the war. Students will learn about the range of roles and responsibilities of men, women and animals during wartimes and peacekeeping efforts. Students will complete a comprehension task on the different elements of the book. Main focus: Identifying facts and details Interpreting language Finding main ideas Interpreting figurative language Distinguishing facts from opinion Inferential skills EN2-9B uses effective and accurate sentence structure, grammatical features, punctuation conventions and vocabulary relevant to the type of text when responding to and composing texts. EN2-10C thinks imaginatively, creatively and interpretively about information, ideas and texts when responding to and composing texts. EN2-11D responds to and composes a range of texts that express viewpoints of the world similar to and different from their own. Poetry: Students will be learning how to write various types of Poetry. Students will be looking at the various grammatical features required in these text types such as tense, verbs, nouns, adjectives, alliteration, similes and rhyme. Students will be participating in guided reading where they are grouped together to read, discuss and comprehend levelled books with the Teacher each day. Students will be learning Foundation Handwriting based upon lessons from the textbook and the Teacher modeling cursive handwriting on the board. . EN2-12E recognises and uses an increasing range of strategies to reflect on their own and others’ learning. Library Outcomes: EN2-6B; EN2-8B; EN2-10C Mathematics The Working Mathematically Strand will be incorporated in all other strands of Mathematics. It includes:*Questioning *Applying Strategies *Communicating *Reasoning *Reflecting PAS2.1 Generates, describes and records number patterns using a variety of strategies. DS2.1 Gathers and organizes data, displays data using tables and graphs, and interprets the results. MS2.2 Estimates, measures, compares and records the area of surfaces in square centimetres and square metres. MS2.4 Estimates, measures, compares and records masses using kilograms and grams. The focus will be on number relations. The students will be learning about Data with the focus being on tables and the reading and analyzing of column graphs. The students will be learning about Chance with the focus being on chance experiments, recording outcomes and describing likelihood. The students will be learning about Measurement with the focus being on volume, informal units,millilitres, litres, cubic centimetres and the volume of rectangular prisms. The students will be learning about Space with the focus being on angles and parallel lines. We will also cover position and the compass points. SGS2.2b Space –Identifies compares and describes angles in practical situations. SGS2.3 Uses simple maps and grids to represent position and follow routes. NS2.4 Fractions and Decimals Models, compares and represents commonly used fractions and decimals. Religion Studies in Religion are based on Christianity and in particular the Maronite faith. The students will study the Feast Days and important times of the religious calendar, whilst also studying the Bible and its teachings. The students will be learning about fractions and decimals with the focus being on decimal hundredths, equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting decimals and money. We will also have a revision week where all topics will be revised. Caring for God’s Wondrous Creation The students will recognise and appreciate the beauty and wonder of God’s creation. (23C7) The students will grow in awareness of the need to take care of and take responsibility for God’s creation. The students will compose psalms of praise to celebrate and give thanks for God’s creation. Advent –Making Promises (23C8) Christmas – The Promise comes true (23C9) The students will explore the concept of promises and promise making. The students will recall God’s earliest promises to his people in the Old Testament. The students will identify Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promises spoken through His people. The students will identify Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s covenant. The topics studied follow the Sharing Our Story document developed by the Catholic Education Office, Diocese of Parramatta. The students will compare and contrast the different responses of those involved in God’s promise to send a saviour. Human Society & Its Environment Taught in Term 1 and Term 3 Science & Technology – Terms 2 & 4 Students will identify ways in which they can show goodwill to others at Christmas. Students will role play Mary and Joseph waiting for the birth of Jesus. Students will read Luke 2:1-7 and discuss the birth of Jesus and the fulfillment of God’s promise. INV S2.7 Conducts investigations by observing, questioning, predicting, testing, collecting, recording and analysing data, and drawing conclusions. -The students will be involved in many experiments this term to develop Scientific questioning, analysing, investigating, discoveries and conclusions. DM S2.8 Develops, implements and evaluates ideas using drawings, models and prototypes at appropriate stages of the design process. These are some of the experiments that the students will be involved in: - Magical inflating balloons - Getting an egg into a bottle - Dancing Sultanas - Salt Volcano -The students will be writing Scientific Reports as a means of documenting these experiments. PP S2.4 Identifies various types and sources of energy and devises systems that use energy. Personal Development, Health & Physical Education Creative Arts DMS2.2 Makes decisions as an individual and as a group member. PROBLEM-SOLVING PHS2.12Discusses the factors influencing personal health choices. In Health, students will learn about the healthy food pyramid. They will participate in discussions and activities about the benefits of a healthy diet and exercising. Also which food give us nutritional value and energy so we can have strong healthy bodies. Students will also keep their own food journal for a week. During Physical Education, students will be focusing on cricket. They will learn the rules of the game, learning each skill of the game in isolation (Batting, bowling, fielding). At the end of the term the students will participate in a game of cricket. MAKING VAS2.1 Represents the qualities of experiences and things that are interesting or beautiful by choosing among aspects of subject matter. VA2.2 Uses the forms to suggest the qualities of subject matter. (Drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture & 3D form, ceramics, fibre, photography, digital forms) The students will be taught various art techniques to create different art pieces that are integrated into the themes of Remembrance, Anzac Day and the Christmas season. Students will be using their own inspired creativity to create an Anzac wreath and poppies through the use of various art making processes and materials. They will also use their artistic skills when creating Chinese Christmas lanterns, Nativity set and Santa baskets. APPRECIATING VAS2.3 Acknowledges that artists make artworks for different reasons and that various interpretations are possible. VAS2.4 Identifies connections between subject matter in artworks and what they refer to, and appreciates the use of particular techniques. Music MUS2.1 MUS2.2 MUS2.3 MUES2.4 Year 3 will listen, learn and sing to various Christmas carols such as the Drummer Boy, Silent night and Hark the Herald. Students will identify and compose the different beats of the carols using instruments.
