SYSTEMS ENGINEER NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR
Full-time, exempt position for Big Bend Technology
SALARY:
$64,000-$70,000 depending on experience for a full-time, 12-month renewable
contract (pro-rated for first year).

Big Bend Community College is a rural community college located in the sunny, central part of
Washington State and accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Big Bend
Community College serves approximately 5,000 students annually, with an annualized FTE of
approximately 2,100, in a 4,600-square-mile service district including 15 communities in Grant and
Adams Counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County with on-site and online instruction.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Act as a senior-level computer systems and network programming technical resource. Administer all
aspects of configuration and network systems programming on mission critical network devices,
networks, network security and telephony. Design, plan, program, configure, install, and ensure
functionality, security and stability of network devices; routers, firewalls, switches, VLANs, subnets,
quality of service, IP telephony, Cisco Unified Communications Components, etc.

Troubleshoot network devices, applications and network connectivity problems and provide support on
systems issues. Develop and recommend strategies for the implementation of new software and
hardware technologies. Uses independent judgment in performing the majority of the job duties.
Administers and maintains networks and network devices and proactively observes trends or problem areas
that may need correction. Must stay current with technology trends, best practices and roadmaps. Provides
technical assistance to ITS department staff and serves as a technical resource to various college
technology users and groups. Works as a team with other technology engineers, technology professionals,
project managers and college staff to collectively provide support to the organization.
This position reports to the Director of Information Technology.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary essential duties and responsibilities include but will not be limited to the following:
 Develops, designs, configures, programs, deploys, implements and maintains the enterprise network
systems with security, manageability, interoperability, scalability and reliability as the cornerstone to
every project and service.
 Responsible for the management and maintenance of the enterprise voice and data network, voice
mail system, VoIP telephony systems, wide-area network, local-area network and virtual networks
and the infrastructure supporting those systems. Ensures secure local and remote access to
enterprise computing systems and information.
 Monitors network(s), LAN, WAN, devices, device logs, etc. for utilization and availability. Analyzes
and report information collected from monitoring systems for network security risks as well as
network stability, quality of service, and usage.
 Defines future architecture views includes mapping business strategies to technology strategies,
mapping business needs to the IT infrastructure, and recommending architectural and security
standards. Serve as a subject matter expert advising, recommending, and defining technology
solutions, capacity planning, implementation procedures, project scope, timelines, and improving
systems performance.
 Reviews Information Technology policies and procedures. Deliver recommendations based on
current and future needs, industry best practices and cyber security awareness.
 Manages multiple simultaneous complex enterprise technology projects. Plans resource allocation
and develops work plans to meet milestones and timelines for highly visible and complex IT projects
while minimizing impact and risk to the organization.
 Responds and resolves customer issues that are escalated for all enterprise systems and support
other Information Technology staff, projects, issues and systems as challenges arise.
 Maintains service levels through systems security, stability, and integrity for the purpose of warranty
and utility, adherence to industry and departmental standards while leveraging system capabilities.
 Trains college staff through traditional, one-on-one, team collaboration, information exchange, and
responding to inquiry.
 Maintains cooperative working relationship with College staff, vendors, consultants, other
organizations and the public.
 Retains proficiency on relevant technologies, awareness of security threats, industry trends, and best
practices through training, research and collaboration.
OTHER WORK RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional
affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
 Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but
is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire,
disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
 Ensures compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
 Conduct self in a professional manner and ensures the interaction with team members and other
support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive to the college’s values.
 Perform related duties and responsibilities as may be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the degree.
 Three years’ or more experience working in Information Technology.
 Previous experience as a senior-level or subject matter expert in information technology.
 The ability to demonstrate thorough knowledge, understanding, and practical experience in Cisco
networking; IP, routing, firewalls, switches, VLANs, subnets, quality of service, IP telephony, Cisco
Unified Communications Components etc.
 Cisco CCNA certification.
 Familiarity with industry terminology, best practices, project management, systems analysis and ITIL.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
 Familiarity and experience with SQL, Microsoft Server, SAN/NAS, backup and recovery.
 CCNP and/or CCIE certification.
 Previous experience working in education, preferably higher education.
 Previous experience working in a multi-cultural environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
 Ability to stand and sit as needed. Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screens in
performing work assignments. Frequent need for oral and auditory communications. Occasionally
kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach, and lift up to 50 lbs., unassisted.
