MEMORANDUM To: IU South Bend Staff, Students, Faculty and Administrators From: Mike Keen, Director Center for a Sustainable Future Subject: Date: IU South Bend Student Sustainability Award February 28, 2013 IU South Bend is committed to helping to create a sustainable future, both on campus and in the community. Sustainability is commonly defined as “Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” In order to contribute to a sustainable future, we can all work together to: 1. Reduce and eventually eliminate our contributions to the systematic accumulation of materials taken from the earth’s crust, i.e., fossil fuels, metals and minerals; 2. Reduce and eventually eliminate our contributions to the systematic accumulation of substances produced by society, i.e., synthetic chemicals and unnatural substances such as plastics, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other substance foreign to nature; 3. Reduce and eventually eliminate our contributions to the ongoing depletion and degradation of nature, i.e., water, air, forests, soil. 4. Reduce and eventually eliminate our contributions to conditions that systematically undermine people’s abilities to meet their own needs. IU South Bend students have been engaged in such efforts since the 1970s, with early individual recycling efforts. More recently, students have begun to explore more formal and systematic opportunities for the creation of a sustainable campus community through the Sustainability and Wellness Club and the Campus Community Garden. In order to highlight the leading role IU South Bend students have played, and will continue to play in our efforts to create a more sustainable future, each year the campus recognizes one student for their outstanding contributions to sustainability at IU South Bend. The awardee is selected by the Campus Sustainability Awards Selection Committee and receives $250 in recognition of their efforts. Those eligible for the award include full and part time undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled at IU South Bend. Individuals may be nominated by any member of the IU South Bend community, including staff, students, faculty, and administrators. Individuals may not nominate themselves. Deadline date is Friday, March 29, 2013.
