Hours: (Spring 2016): Mon-Thurs 12:15-1pm; Tues/Thurs 2:15-3pm.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Anthropology 110L is a one unit lab course in Physical
Anthropology. It is designed to supplement the Anthropology 102 lecture course by providing handson lab experience in human evolution, genetics, osteology, and other related topics, as well as selfguided, simulated lab experiences (online access required) outside of class meetings.
It is strongly recommended you take this lab concurrently with the lecture Anthro 102
Inevitably one’s grade in the lecture class, Anthro 102, will be enhanced by taking this lab. Anthro
110L satisfies all WNC degree requirements for LAB SCIENCE. It counts towards the Anthropology
major at UNR and UNLV, and is transferable to all institutions in Nevada and elsewhere.
ASSIGNMENTS and GRADING: Your grade will be based on lab assignments, lab practicals
(quizzes), participation in class discussions, and attendance.
LAB ASSIGNMENTS: Ten interactive, online labs will be assigned (50% of course grade;
estimated at 2hrs apiece). Labs are due Tuesday nights by midnight. Late assignments will
receive half credit. Late assignments can be submitted until May 15 at midnight. In addition to the
lab assignments, classroom activities will be scheduled each week (15 meetings) that involve
hands-on experience with simulated human skeletal material and hominid fossil replicas.
LAB PRACTICALS/QUIZZES: Two lab quizzes (40% of course grade):
Lab Practical #1: Human Osteology
Lab Practical #2: Hominid Fossils
PARTICIPATION: You are expected to complete the lab assignments prior to class;
attendance is also a factor in the course grade (10% of course grade).
“W” GRADES: I cannot assign a “W” grade for the course. If you choose to withdraw from the
course, it is your responsibility to do this yourself online by Apr 1. Otherwise I will give you the
grade you have earned by the date of the last quiz.
GRADES: For quizzes and course grade: 94-100 = A; 90-93 = A- 87-89 = B+; 84-86 = B; 80-83
=B-; 77-79 = C+; 74-76 = C; 70-73 = C-; 67-69 = D+; 64-66 = D; 60-63 = D-; 0-59 = F.
EXCESSIVE ABSENCES: I will suspend grading assignments if more than TWO (2) class
meetings are missed, whatever the reasons. This will necessitate a conference with me for
reinstatement, and will lower your course grade.
EXTRA CREDIT: An optional Saturday Field Trip to Grimes Point petroglyph site, and Hidden
Cave archaeological site near Fallon, may be arranged during the semester. I will announce
dates and details of this tentative trip later. This will be the only opportunity to earn extra credit.
ETHICS: Plagiarism on any assignment is not acceptable, will result in an "F" (0%) for that
assignment, and could result in a failing grade for the course.
CELL PHONES, TABLETS, and RECORDING DEVICES: Turn off cell phones, tablets, and
other devices while in class. Failure to do so may result in the loss of points, and the lowering of
your grade. Use of any recording devices (audio or video) in class or during class activities is
prohibited without formal, written permission from the instructor.
ACADEMIC DISABILITY: Any student with a disability needing academic adjustments or
accommodations speak with me, or contact the Disability Support Services (445-4459).
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated they can:
1. Use terminology specific to the anthropological topics selected for this course.
2. Demonstrate the principles and theories of human evolution and the origins of the human
species.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the physical attributes of humans and what sets us apart
from other species.
4. Perform laboratory activities that demonstrate the ability to apply key concepts of physical
and biological anthropology.

TURNITIN.COM
A second Turnitin.com site is set up for the lab, separate from the lecture site (Ant 102).
You can check your progress and current grade on this website. As you complete labs and quizzes,
I will post them here. But you do not submit Labs here; send them to my email: hal.starratt@wnc.edu.
1. Go to the website www.turnitin.com and sign in using the same ID and Password you use for
Anthro 102.
2. Select "add a class."
4. Use the following info to enroll in this class:
Anthropology 110L: Physical Anthropology Lab
Class ID: 11378516
Class Enrollment Password: starratt
(you will use this info only once—the first time you set up your account)
7. Finish. “Log in to Turnitin”
8. Your scores on all your class work will be posted here so you can keep track of how you’re doing
during the semester. If you fail to set up your account for the lab (ANT 110L) I will do it for you, but
you may not be able to access the site.
