Declaration Requirements
Declare
B.A. Major Anthropology
By the time Junior year status (85 units) is achieved. Course work
while declared in the Anthropology major must be taken for a
minimum of 5 academic quarters, except by approved exception.
Students will be pre-screened for adequate academic standing
before being accepted into the major.
1. Plan
Meet with the Undergraduate Student Program Coordinator or Peer
Adviser to prepare the Checklist and Planning Form
2. Apply
Apply on Axess for the B.A. Major in Anthropology.
3. File
Submit the forms to the Undergraduate Student Program Coordinator
and request Faculty Adviser assignment.
4. Advise
Meet with your Faculty Adviser to approve the Checklist and Planning
form – quarterly meetings recommended.
Degree Requirements
All units, 180 for multiple major and 225 for dual degrees
(Stanford University Regulation)
B.A. Major Anthropology
Units in ANTHRO, RELATED, and TRANSFER coursework, pass
with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0, or higher.
Total Units
(Must be coherent program of study; approval from
Anthropology Faculty Adviser required)
65 units, pass with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0, or higher.
A minimum of 15 units must be ANTHRO courses numbered 100 or
above
Related Units
Of the 65 units required for the undergraduate major, 15 of the 65
units may be approved from related areas, overseas studies courses,
and transfer units from outside universities. Related units must be
approved by the student’s faculty advisor.
Emphasis
(Faculty Adviser approval required)
Choose one of the following emphases at the time of declaring the
major:
1) Archaeology & Heritage
2) Culture & Society
3) Ecology, Environment, & Evolution
4) Medical Anthropology
Submit a short paragraph that explains and justifies a self-designed
course of study based on this emphasis which must be approved by
faculty advisor. This self-designed course of study should include a
specific focus on a theoretical area and/or geographical area. The
requirements for Medical Anthropology emphasis are the same as
those for Cultural & Social emphasis.
ANTHRO theory courses have been designated for each emphasis:
(a) ANTHRO 90A. History of Archaeological Thought, (b) ANTHRO
90B. Theory in Cultural and Social Anthropology, and (c) ANTHRO
90C. Theory of Ecological and Environmental Anthropology.
Students must enroll in and pass, with a minimum letter grade of ‘B-‘,
or higher, the ANTHRO theory course that corresponds to their
emphasis. To be taken in the academic year in which the Major is
declared. Must be taken BEFORE LAST QUARTER DURING THE
JUNIOR YEAR.
Students must enroll in and pass, with a minimum letter grade of ‘B-‘,
or higher, an ANTHRO methods course that corresponds to their
emphasis. ANTHRO methods courses have been designated for
each emphasis: (a) ANTHRO 91A. Archaeological Methods, (b)
ANTHRO 91B. Evidence and Methods in Cultural and Social
Anthropology, and (c) ANTHRO 91C. Anthropological Methods in
Ecology, Environment and Evolution. Students whose research
interests are better served by another course may petition for a
requirements substitution with different methods course supported by
the Advisor and approved by petition to the Undergraduate
Committee.

WIM (Writing in the Major)
(Department/University Requirement for the Major)
Students must take one WIM course to fulfill the Anthropology and
University Writing in the Major requirement. Students must enroll in
and pass, with a minimum letter grade of B-, or higher. Students can
fulfill the WIM requirement by taking the ANTHRO theory course that
corresponds to their emphasis. Although the WIM requirement will be
automatically satisfied by taking the required theory course for the
student’s emphasis, other courses may be designated as having
WIM status.
Anthropology Undergraduate "Essential" courses
Students must enroll in and pass four (4) ANTHRO essential
courses, with a minimum letter grade of ‘C’, or higher, from the
designated ANTHRO undergraduate "Essential" course listing.
Essential courses are listed at the 100 level or above and taught by
Anthropology faculty or visiting scholars. Faculty Advisors are
encouraged to work with students to create a program that covers a
breadth of topics including, but not limited to, the following areas: 1)
linguistic & symbolic, 2) race & ethnicity, 3) gender & sexuality, 4)
globalization & transnationalism, 5) science & technology, 6) health &
medicine, 6) archaeology and heritage, 7) paleoanthropology &
genetics, 8) environment, ecology & evolution, and 9) political
economy
Department Foreign Language Competency
Requirement
Students must enroll in and pass, with a minimum letter grade of ‘B-‘
or higher, course work at the second-year level or equivalent.
Alternately, student may take a special exam, demonstrate superior
placement scores, or confirm first-year competency in two or more
languages. Up to 5 language units, at the second year level, or of a
second foreign language, may be considered in the category of
related units for the major.

second foreign language, may count towards the ANTHRO
Major in the B.A. degree)
Satisfactory/No Grade Credit
No more than 10 units (5 ANTHRO units, 5 Related or Transfer units)
may count toward the major.
Directed Individual Study
No more than 10 units
Undergraduates with Field Research Grants
Students who receive Anthropology grants are required to enroll in
ANTHRO 93. Prefield Research Seminar and ANTHRO 94. Postfield
Research Seminar. Students are encouraged to take ANTHRO 92.
Undergraduate Research Proposal Writing Workshop in the Fall and
Winter quarters before submitting a grant application/research
proposal. Students who receive other research grant must consult
the granting agency for enrollment requirements. Students whose
research interests are better served by another course may petition
for a requirements substitution with different (pre) field course
supported by the Advisor and approved by petition to the
Undergraduate Committee.

Advising Milestones
1. In the quarter in which the major is declared, the student must
meet with their assigned adviser, create a rigorous course of study,
and obtain approval for an Anthropology emphasis as a course of
study.
2. Students are required to meet with their adviser at least once per
quarter before each quarter’s ‘course add’ deadline. The signed form
is placed in the student’s file.
3. Before graduating, the student must schedule an exit appointment
with the adviser to make sure course of study has been followed.
