Role of Government
Romans 13:1-7
Introduction: In Touch ministries states, “theologians have discovered that while approximately 29% of
the Bible deals with our personal lives, 71% deals with social, political, and national issues.” So the
question must be asked, does God care about us being involved in government?
A. Origin of government
1. Originally clans/family units, cf. Job 1
2. Small “kingdoms” established but localized, Gen. 14
3. God establishes dispensation of human government, Gen. 8:20-11:9
4. God scatters the peoples, but two principles remain in effect
(a) Human government still man’s responsibility under God’s establishment, Rom. 13:1, 2
(b) Capital punishment, Gen. 9:6; Rom. 13:4
B. Responsibility of government
“Since civil government is necessary and divinely ordained by God (Rom. 13:1–7), it is ultimately under
God’s control. It has been given three political responsibilities: the sword of justice (to punish criminals),
the sword of order (to thwart rebellion), and the sword of war (to defend the state).” Kirby Anderson
1. Sword of justice: punish criminals, LK. 23:40-41
2. Sword of order: thwart rebellion, Matt. 27:27-51
3. Sword of war: defend our borders protect citizens
C. Christian’s responsibilities
1. Be in subjection, Rom. 13:5
2. Keep a good attitude, Matt. 17:24-27; I Pet. 2:13-17
3. Pay taxes, Rom. 13:6, 7
4. Pray for leadership, I Tim. 2:1-3
5. Vote-“evangelicals represented about 27% of the vote 2012”, Glen Bolger, pollster, 2012
D. Pastoral responsibilities, I Tim. 2:1-3; II Tim. 3:16-4:5
1. Pray
2. Preach truth, freedom to do so
3. Teach truth, freedom to do so
4. Live as an example
E. Application
1. Are you registered to vote?
2. Are you aware of issues on which to vote?
3. Do you pray about taking this responsibility?
4. Do you pray for our countries leadership regularly?
5. Do you desire to live a tranquil and quiet life?
Conclusion: Paul exhorts a young pastor to pray for his leadership so they can live a tranquil and quiet
life in Godliness and in dignity. Many of America’s problems come from His people not having a heart
for God and not praying for our leaders Biblically.
