MAGNET 2014-2015 Students will experience an integrated curriculum in Language Arts, Life Science, and U.S. History. Interdisciplinary projects are driven by science or social studies curricula with language arts as the common connection allowing students to learn content and language-based skill sets simultaneously. Magnet classes incorporate rigor and depth through high level questioning and discussion, inquiry, and summative and formative comprehensive evaluations. WEBSITES: Each of the Magnet teachers maintains a class web page with pertinent information. ASSIGNMENTS: Students will have long-term projects, daily assignments, and homework as required. For some integrated projects, students may receive an independent score, or a shared score among Magnet courses. a. Complete all work by the due date. Work is due at the beginning of the period. b. All work must be the student’s own. Plagiarism or cheating of any kind will NOT be tolerated. Plagiarized assignments will receive a zero and the students will be referred to the office for discipline at the discretion of the teacher. HOMEWORK POLICY You are expected to turn in all assignments on the due date when you are in school. We do understand that doing so may not always be possible, for a variety of reasons. Life happens. 1) We will accept late work until the final assessment of the unit. 2) "Late work" is defined as this: When you are present in school, if you're turning in an assignment that day and it isn't printed when you enter class, or it isn't ready to turn in when we call for it, or is incomplete when you turn it in, it's late. Incomplete work is not accepted. 3) Late work will be downgraded one full letter grade. Example: if you earned a B on the assignment, because it is late it will be downgraded one full letter grade to a C. 4) Additionally, missing the original deadline on an assignment when you are present and have been in attendance on prior days will result in a zero entered in the grade book for that assignment until it is turned in, which could effect extra-curricular eligibility, and teacher phone call or e-mail home to your parents. It's much easier on you to just get the work completed on time and turn it in :) MATERIALS Thumbdrive/USB drive Planner Binder (sections for Magnet) Notebook paper Pencil & Pen (including red correcting pens) Colored Pencils Highlighter(s) One Composition Book for Science Labs Box of tissues Box of pencils *A lab notebook is a course requirement for science. The students will use a lab notebook to record all their class notes, lab work, data collected, interpretations, questions, and personal thoughts about their science experiences. Lab notebook format and organization will be taught and assessed in class. Lab book are used daily. Powerschool On-line grading Access: Please be patient Even though parents will be able to check grades 24 hours a day / 7 days a week, Magnet course grades are posted mid-quarter and end-of-quarter, and earlier when possible. Large projects and pieces of writing often take much longer to provide high quality assessment feedback. Calculated course percentages and grades may seem low or high at the beginning of a quarter; grade averages in the early part of a term can fluctuate greatly when even a minor assignment is graded. As more assignments are scored, the calculated grades will normally be closer to the final quarter grade. Several missing assignments, quarter projects or test grades will significantly affect the quarter grade. If the student has questions or concerns about an assignment, he or she must talk to the teacher.
