Dress Rehearsal & Recital Procedure
All performers will be using the dressing rooms backstage or upper cafeteria. When entering the high
school through the auditorium doors, please look for the signs directing each class to the designated
area. If backstage, pass through the hallway next to the auditorium and proceed behind the stage.
Find your dancer’s class poster to know where they will stay during the show, and also what to wear for
each dance. This is also where you will pick them up after the show. Your dancer’s backstage helpers
will be stationed near each poster.
To help your child feel comfortable, please arrive in time so they will be in the dressing area 30 minutes
before the concert begins.
Dancers need to be dressed in costumes including all accessories upon arrival. Please also make
sure your dancer has their shoes, props, etc. and that they have used the restroom. Parents may
wish to stay with young dancers for a few minutes to help them feel more relaxed. It is helpful for young
dancers to nap and eat before the concert.
DANCERS MUST STAY BACKSTAGE DURING THE ENTIRE RECITAL. Please be sure your
dancer has their costume, shoes, and all accessories labeled with their name on each piece to avoid
problems.
FINALE will be rehearsed at the very beginning of the DRESS REHEARSAL. This is done to help
the young dancers get home earlier. They may leave the dress rehearsal once their final dance is
complete.
Please do not send beverages, candy, food, or markers with your child as they are easily spilled
and will stain costumes. Please only send water and “safe” snacks, such as crackers, string cheese,
or fruit snacks.
If your dancer needs to leave the concert early due to illness or an emergency, please tell the backstage
helpers and let Emily know personally.
Dancers in Creative Dance, Pre-Ballet/Tap, and Ballet/Tap I will only be performing in one show
each. Please refer to show order below to know in which recital your dancer is performing.
Dear Parents and Students,
Division Street Dance provides students with an exciting performance experience through its spring
recital. It is a rite of passage for thousands of youngsters, a chance to shine in front of family and friends that
they anticipate with nervous excitement.
The recital offers our students a professionally directed performance that allows them to present to their
families and friends the results of a year’s hard work, dedication and progress.
A big part of the dance training process includes learning through performance. The experience helps
build self-esteem, self-assurance, and contributes to a sense of confidence. Although performance opportunities
can help prepare some students for a possible career in dance, they also contribute to children’s success in nondance activities. That onstage experience can result in better in-school presentations, improved social skills,
and strong interview skills for future college and job opportunities. The rehearsal process is a tremendous
learning experience as well. It helps the children develop retention skills, and by working with their classmates
on a group performance, they learn the positive aspects of working as a team to create the best result.
Dedication to recital commitments is the responsibility of both students and their parents. I have created
this handbook in an effort to clarify what I expect from you in terms of commitments and responsibility to the
annual recital, the school and other students and parents.
Thank you, Emily Boyd

RECITAL UPDATES
As the season progresses, additional recital information or updates will be posted on the bulletin boards at the
studio and emailed. Please make it your responsibility to keep up to date with this information. It is my goal to
make the recital experience organized and exciting for all involved. It is a team effort: students, parents,
teachers and the director are key players in the success of the show. Please know, each dancer’s account must
be current in order for her or him to dance in the dress rehearsal and recital.
COSTUME CARE
We recommend that your child’s name be placed in all costumes, shoes, accessories, and tights. Place costumes
in a garment bag with your child’s name on the outside. (If your child has a tutu, hang the costume upside
down.) Pack accessories in a clear plastic bag with your child’s name on the bag and on each item. Press all
costumes prior to the dress rehearsal and the performance according to the instructions that were given with the
costume. Please do NOT wash costumes in your washing machine, dry clean them only (after the recital).
COSTUME CHANGES
If your child has several costumes, a costume rack is a smart investment. It keeps the costumes organized,
prevents wrinkles, and provides some privacy during costume changes. Hang costumes on the rack in the order
they will be needed for the show. If you do not have access to a costume rack, please try to keep all costumes as
organized as possible in order to facilitate quick costume changes. Backstage helpers will be there to help your
child change quickly as well.
TIGHTS
To ensure that there are no discrepancies in color and style, tights for each class are included in the costume
order. Additional tights can be purchased through the studio before the dress rehearsal and recital. Please only
wear these new tights for Picture Day, the dress rehearsal, and the recitals, and do not wear or wash them
beforehand. (Note: having a second pair of tights offers students and parents a greater sense of security.) Extra
tights will be available at the high school backstage during the dress rehearsal and recital and will be $10 per
pair.
SHOES
The type of shoe your dancer should have is listed in the studio policies. Please ask if you have any questions.
HAIR AND MAKEUP
The strong lighting on stage has a tendency to wash out many skin tones. For this reason, students are
recommended, but not required to wear makeup for the dress rehearsal and recital: for girls –foundation,
lipstick, blush, eye shadow, and mascara. For the boys, a little blush works well.
There are no uniform hairstyles required, except hair should be pulled back and out of your dancer’s face, and
hair accessories from costumes must be used. Nail polish or jewelry (except small stud earrings) are not
allowed.
PRE-PLANNING
The recital is not a one day activity. Gather all costumes, accessories, shoes and makeup several days in
advance so you will know of something is missing or is not right. Make a checklist of your child’s routines,
listing their costumes, tights, shoes, and any accessories, and refer to it to make sure you have all your supplies
before going to the theater.
Also bring extra hair gel, hair nets, bobby pins, and hairspray. Other handy extras include:
Baby wipes/shout wipes (to fix makeup mistakes or wash hands)
Baby powder (for itchy costumes)
Safety pins (for emergency costume repairs)
Clean nail polish (to repair holes or runs in tights when there is not time to change them)
A pain reliever of choice
Band Aids (the invisible kind)
DRESS REHEARSAL
The dress rehearsal allows the students to become familiar with the auditorium surroundings and feel
comfortable with their performance, costumes and being on stage. Lighting, music cues, set changes, and all
other logistics for an organized and professional performance are rehearsed so that the students make the best
impression possible. Participation for the dress rehearsal is MANDATORY. All dancers will participate in the
dress rehearsal; dances with multiple classes will run in order of the show, with the Saturday dancers going first,
followed by the Sunday dancers.
We will run an organized and timely dress rehearsal; your help with the process will guarantee a professional
production. Please arrive in costume at least 30 mins prior to curtain call. We will run the finale FIRST.
Dancers can watch the rehearsal. They will remain backstage during the actual recital performance. Dancers are
allowed to leave after they have completed their last dance.
FINALE
All students should participate in the finale (except You & Me), which will be rehearsed during the last few
months of class. A run through of the finale will take place at the dress rehearsal at the very beginning. At this
dress rehearsal run through, dancers should wear their first costume of the show. At the recital, all students
will remain in their last performance costume for the finale.
DRESSING ROOM ETIQUETTE
Students must respect other students’ space and property in the dressing room. The students will spend more
time in the dressing room than onstage or in the auditorium, so please do your best to keep them organized and
clean. No food or drink will be allowed in the dressing room, except water and “safe” snacks.
DRESS REHEARSAL GUESTS
One parent or guardian may accompany each student to the dress rehearsal. Please, no other guests or other
children. We want to maintain as quiet and orderly a dress rehearsal as possible.
DANCER DROP OFF AND PICK UP
Parents and guardians should bring the students to their assigned dressing area, where they will be checked in
and placed under supervision of their backstage helpers. Parents and guardians should pick up their children in
the same place once the child is done dancing. Except for You & Me dancers, Please have your dancer remain
in the dressing room with their backstage helpers during the recital. It gives a more professional appearance
when the performers are not in the audience and decreases the noise and commotion as well.
DRESS REHEARSAL DISMISSAL
Students will be dismissed from rehearsal once they have completed all of their routines, including the finale.
We will rehearse the finale at the beginning of the dress rehearsal so that students who are not in other dances
do not have to remain through the end of the rehearsal.
VIDEO AND PHOTOGRAPHY
Please note: no video or flash photography will be allowed in the auditorium at the recital – please also inform
your family and friends attending the show of this policy. There will be an opportunity for you to purchase a
professional DVD copy of the dance recital. You may however, take photos or videos at the dress rehearsal if
you would like.
AUDITORIUM RULES
No eating, drinking, or smoking allowed in the auditorium or dressing rooms. Dancers will remain in the
dressing room with their backstage helpers during the recital when they are not on stage. They are allowed to
watch during the dress rehearsal but must be responsible for being back stage in a timely manner for their
dances. Please only enter and exit the auditorium between dances.
BACKSTAGE
Family members and friends do not belong backstage or in the dressing rooms during rehearsal or recital. The
same applies during intermission and after the show. There is a lot of backstage activity in a limited space, and
dressing rooms are a private area. Please remind your family and guests to be respectful to these areas. Those
who wish to greet a performer after the show or present flowers should do so in the lobby areas or on stage
where you may take pictures.
BACKSTAGE HELPERS
Backstage helpers are needed for each class to supervise the dancers. Please contact Emily to volunteer to
help. They do not need a recital ticket and will be able to watch the kids perform from backstage. Backstage
helpers must assure that each child in her care is safe and accounted for. They are responsible for making sure
that each child is in the proper costume, has the proper accessories and shoes, and is backstage at the right time.
They are also responsible for seeing that all children return to their dressing room after their performance. The
number of volunteers needed for each class will be determined by the numbers of students (1-6 students = 1
volunteer, 7-12 students = 2-3 volunteers).
If there are too many volunteers for one class, some may be asked to work with children from another class.
During the performances, backstage helpers leave the students at the entrance door with their teacher and watch
the dance from the exit side of the stage.
Volunteers are only allowed to enter the exit side of the stage. Only dance teachers and assistants will be
allowed to enter the entrance side of the stage.
RECITAL PHOTOS
Class photos will be taken on April 17th. Please confirm your child’s time on the photo schedule. All students
are required to be present for their class photo. If there are any conflicts, please let Emily know right
away. After the group photo shoot, students may choose to have an individual photo taken in any or all their
costumes. There is no obligation to purchase photos. Please arrive 10 minutes before your child’s scheduled
time.
RECITAL TICKET POLICY
Tickets will go on sale April 19th from 1-5 pm for dance families. All tickets are assigned seating. All
studio accounts (tuition, costumes, ect.) must be paid in full before any family may purchase recital tickets. All
ticket sales are final.
FLOWERS, DVDS, and CONCESSIONS
Forget Me Not Florist will be on hand before, during, and after the recitals for your convenience to purchase
flowers and other keepsakes. The show will be professionally recorded and DVDs may be purchased before,
during, or after show. We will also have concessions available for purchase before and after the show and
during intermission.
PARTICIPATION TROPHIES & PERFECT ATTENDANCE RIBBONS
Trophies for dancers will be available for purchase along with recital tickets. These are a great way to
commemorate your dancer’s year. Trophies will be $15 each and can be personalized with name and year.
Trophies will be available to pick up backstage after the recitals. We will also be handing out Perfect
Attendance ribbons at the conclusion of the finale to all dancers who attended or made up every class during the
year.
RECITAL T-SHIRTS
Recital t-shirts designed by the dancer who submitted the winning design in our contest will be available for
purchase along with tickets. T-shirts will be $15 each and will list all dancers’ names on the back. These are
also a great way for your dancer to remember their special year! All dancers in Opening Number will wear tshirts for this dance.
NOTE TO PARENTS WITH YOUNG DANCERS
Dress rehearsal and recital can get long for young ones. Please double check the recital line up to know your
dancer’s performance number. If they are later in the show please bring some kind of activities to keep your
child occupied. Thank you!
