Playground Supervision
Teachers are to be punctual, active and vigilant and present in the playground when on duty. They are to investigate all
incidents reported or observed. Incidents of a serious nature must be reported to an executive member. Teachers should
acknowledge appropriate behaviour and consistently enforce rules.
Playground coordinator develops a playground for the term ahead. All teachers are assigned to a duty for the week. All changes to
the playground duty roster must go through the playground coordinator.
Casuals are assigned; by the playground coordinator and/or principal; a duty and staff can be released to attend to other duties.
Teachers are required to be at school 30 minutes before the day starts, i.e. 8.45am and are required to remain for 30 minutes after.
Refer to the Teaching Award.
Active teachers must be in control at all times by







knowing who is responsible and what to do in all situations
roam across the entire playground area, not remain in one spot
make 4 positive comments to every negative contact
frequent scan the area
taking dangerous students off the playground
stop the entire school from playing, if warranted
complete entries on SENTRAL, within 24 hours
Only casuals need to submit paperwork for the executive to record on SENTRAL.
DUTIES
Before 8.50am
Children are to sit on seats in the picnic area (or COLA, if inclement weather).
Minimal supervision provided
NB. School bags not to be taken to rooms until 8.50am
Teachers, once you see & acknowledge students in the school before 8.50am; you are accountable for their safety and behaviour.
8.50am - 9.15am
2 duty teachers commence duty promptly
Morning Procedure
court.
Students place their bag outside room, and then move to asphalt areas; which are the COLA or netball
Monitor toilets and all walk ways.
Grass areas and fixed equipment are NOT to be used before school.
Permitted Activities - The only ball game permitted is handball (with tennis balls).
9.15am Procedure
Bell rings.
Students walk to class and line up in an orderly fashion to wait for their teachers.
2 students inform principal when teacher does not arrive (teacher to nominate students to do this job)
11.15 - 11.25am (LUNCH)
Students eat lunches, supervised by a team of teachers not on the following duty.
Teachers, who are on duty, must use this eating time to organise bathroom breaks and lunch/snack in
order to be prompt to duty and to class at the end of duty.
11.25 - 11.55am several teachers on duty – see timetable
COLA, Year 6 area, canteen and grass area in between
quiet games (handball, skipping, K-2 fixed equipment, chess);
assist perfect/captain with issues coming from their monitoring of the canteen
year 6 quiet area – a sit and chat areas; NO Games! NO Food! No other grades/visitors
Hall Playground (from the stage to the opposite wall of year 1 classrooms)
planned games;
K-2 soccer games
playground equipment
Front of school (from the side of the hall to the garden outside principal’s office)
volley ball courts
table area
handball games along the footpath
Area A (from top soccer court, netball court down to back of the library)
organised games on the netball (including handball, skipping, Pacman etc)
monitoring 3 -6 Fixed equipment (one student per piece of equipment at a time)
establishing a referee form the soccer game (No referee; No game; Play by the rules or no game)
Area B (from the back of the demountable up along the fence to the back fence)

Area C (between the year 6 rooms and the demountable and toilet area)
shooting hoops using the rings on the wall
quiet games
monitoring the toilets and bubblers
Library (1st break)
Students to follow PBIS rules
only open Monday to Thursday during lunch break
11.55am

1.15 - 1.25pm RECESS
Students eat lunches, supervised by a team of teachers not on the following duty.

1.25 -2.05pm several teachers on duty – see timetable

Detention
2.05pm
Executive staff are on for the week per the roster and are
required to send for students and follow up on all issues
STUDENTS are not permitted to go to canteen before attending detention
Students move to class and line up in an orderly fashion to wait for their teachers.
3.20pm AFTER SCHOOL
Students attending OOHSC walk down to hall independently
Students walking home from school must cross at the crossing & use the railway foot bridge as required.
All students using the back gate must maintain their own safety, by using grassed pathways.
Bike/scooter riders should leave the grounds as soon as possible, with their helmet on.
Bikes/scooter riders are NOT to be ridden in the school playground.
Bike riders must by 8 years of age before riding without a parent.
3.20 - 3.40pm Bus DUTY
Students collected by day care bus sit on seats outside admin area
Students catching the school bus; keep their bags with them and meet on the netball court
Teacher to supervise children onto bus. All staff and students must exit and enter via the canteen
breeze way. Not the car park entrance.
During wet weather bus students assemble in canteen shelter area, after the rest of the school has left.
Designated waiting areas for parents are the picnic seats/canteen and the seats under the pine tree.
Children who have not been picked up are to report to the bus lines on the netball court until students move out to the bus. Then
they report to the office, once the bus has left.
An executive is always at school until 4.00 pm and is available to assist students who are not picked up on time at 3.20 p.m
Playground Strategies for when the playground become difficult to handle – such as a fight; an accident;
constant complaints from students about concerning issues






send individual students to a timeout spot, e.g. a lunch seat; the edge of a garden bed; near a pole
blowing a whistle and stop the entire playground from playing by sitting all children where they are
Call a whole school assembly by ringing the playground bell under the COLA
Send the ‘Red Emergency Card’ to the staff room for all staff to respond to the emergency
remember to investigate the situation. Listen to the students; both sides before assigning blame/consequence
Use! Don’t threaten with Red and white slips – Don’t second guess yourself!
Wet Weather Routine – refer to Duty Roster
All teachers are buddied up with another staff member and are to divide eating and play time equally between both staff members
during wet weather sessions. This includes the eating and playtimes – in total 40 minutes or 20 minutes each.
Students can go to the canteen. However, they are not permitted to play outside their room. One in; all in for the duration despite
what might happen with the weather.
Excursions and Sporting activities
Notification (under Excursion Policy) must be given to playground Coordinator in order to arrange a swap or closure of
playground(s)
Compulsory for all staff
ALL STAFF MUST COMPLETE ENTRIES ON SENTRAL This includes Red Slips and white. (We are now paperless)
Executive complete the PARENT INFORMATION sheets during detention.
