It is essential that all members of the College display a positive attitude towards the provision of Health and Safety in regards to the extreme temperatures that Dubai can seasonally suffer from. Policy – to be used in May, June, September and October OR during any other periods when the temperature goes above the mid 30 degrees C OR at times when the students are outside for a long period of time e.g. Sports Day, swim galas etc. 1. There is indoor space available, for example the sports hall can be used for students to congregate. No physical sport/running around or eating / drinking is allowed in the sports hall as it may be crowded / dangerous to allow this. 2. Students are not allowed to spend the whole of break outside. Duty staff will cut breaks short for all pupils playing outside and send them back indoors where they can have time to cool down and take in more fluids to rehydrate themselves. The duty staff will carry on their duty inside until the end of normal break. First break is only 20 minutes and is short but staff will move students in 3 minutes before the normal end of the break. The second lunch break is much longer (40 minutes) and staff will move all students inside 5 minutes before the end of normal break. This early 5 minute rule will also happen on a Thursday where there is only 1 break of 35 minutes. 3. Students who physically exert themselves / run around a lot during breaks should be drinking plenty of water. Duty staff are to stop and ask the students doing this to take a rest and have a water break. 4. If a water fountain is not working or there is a shortage of paper cups, students are to inform a member of the duty staff who should then ask Raj to attend to the problem 5. Parents are informed on communicator that they may wish to provide their child / children with sun screen and to ask them to remind their children to take regular in takes of fluid. 6. On Sports Day – more temporary shelter and water stations will be provided. Parents and Students will be reminded that they must wear sun screen. There will also be some sun screen stations around the college for students to re-apply sun screen as necessary. Duty staff to be vigilant and advise students to reapply and to drink more fluids 7. College hats can be purchased for extra protection. Also more permanent shelter is being looked at. 2 Sun and Heat Extreme Temperature Policy
