Duty Guidelines and Procedures SUPERVISION OF HALLS, LUNCH, AND RECESS We will be implementing Systemic Supervision which is based on research that has identified what works well with students. It is a method of supervising students and physical spaces that will help: decrease problem behavior, increase student cooperation, an make supervisor’s job less stressful and more fun. Systemic Supervision has 4 key skills that increase supervisors’ effectiveness: Be Activeo Move around constantly and in an unpredictable in a random pattern where you can see students and what they are doing. o Scan with your eyes and ears so you notice potential problems right away. Be Positiveo Connect students in a friendly atmosphere and make an effort to connect with individual students and with students in groups. o Give positive reinforcement with students’ behavior is appropriate and let them know you appreciate it. Respond to Problems o Address problem behavior immediately or as soon as possible by speaking privately and respectfully with the student o Define the problem and give the student a choice to cooperate with a direction, correction and/or a predetermined consequence. If the student does not cooperate, the consequence is carried out consistently. Communicate o Discuss rules and expectations regularly o Communicate with parents about their children and school rules and expectations, and invite them to participate in school events and activities. o Communicate with staff and share positive and negative student behavior in a private, not public place, and make sure the discussion is constructive, not destructive. Finally, use the 4:1 rule- For every negative interactions, have 4 positive interactions. This will change the tone of the building. Hall Duty procedures: 1. Each student in the halls during the time when classes are in session must have in his or her possession a Hall Pass. 2. Students found in the halls without a proper pass are to be escorted back to their classroom. 3. Check the boys’ and girls’ restrooms at least twice each period and more. 4. Walk and observe all halls at irregular intervals. Do not sit or remain in one area. 5. Become acquainted with any classroom situation where a substitute is teaching and offer cooperation and assistance if such seems necessary and/or indicated. 6. Refer all visitors to the office. 7. Assist those teachers who have special activities in progress – i.e. field trips, health examinations, student photographs, etc. 8. Teachers are expected to be on duty during the entire period of assignment and actively supervising the halls LUNCH AND RECESS DUTY 1. Report to the cafeteria or playground timely. 2 teachers should be in the cafeteria and 3 should be on the playground. 2. 6th grade students are walked to the cafeteria (girls) or to the playground(boys) by their teacher. Students should have a seat when they come into the cafeteria. Teachers should not leave until a duty teacher arrives. Use the “hand up” signal to get the cafeteria ready for any announcements and to begin the dismissal process. Once the students are seated and settled, dismiss a few tables at a time to get their lunch. Do not let the lines get too long. 3. Teachers will start to dismiss students to the playground 20minutes after the lunch period starts. One of the duty teachers from the cafeteria will stand at the exit door outside to monitor the students. 4. Students that begin with recess will line up on the sidewalk under the tress to enter for lunch. These students will not enter the building until the cafeteria is emptied from the first lunch. The duty teacher that is by the exit door will escort the students into the cafeteria. 5. In the event of inclement weather students will go to the auditorium or gym for indoor recess. In the auditorium students should sit in the middle section and have a book to read or classwork/homework to complete. 6. Playground boundaries are limited to the black top area and field besides and behind the modular units. 7. At the end of the lunch period students will be dismissed by the teacher to their next class. Teachers that had lunch that period and teachers going to lunch as well as duty teachers should help supervise the halls at dismissal time. Students do not have time to waste. Their next class starts right away. General Dismissal Procedures As buses arrive their route numbers will be called over the PA starting at 3:00pm. Only students on that route should be dismissed. Remind the students that their bus will leave 5 minutes after it is called. At 3:10pm all remaining buses will be called as well as walkers. Remain in the hall on duty until 3:15pm. Help keep a calm school atmosphere and dismissal by only releasing students when their bus is called. Students who are picked up by a parent should bring a note and give it to their 9th period teacher. Parent pick ups will be dismissed at 3:00pm. Students whose lockers are located in or near the lobby, cafeteria, and unified arts hallway; as well students whose lockers are located directly above this area should exit through the lobby doors. Students whose lockers are in the hallway near 114-117 and on the 2nd floor near this area should exit using the gym doors near the courtyard. There will be no reentry into the building. Students staying for detention or extracurricular activities are to go their assigned areas and do not come outside. For this process to run smoothly, all staff members assigned to monitor bus students must be in their areas when the students are let out. Staff members should not be in their classrooms at dismissal. You are to remain in your areas until 3:15pm.
