Cell Structure & Function Project Four Project Options 1). Cell Analogies Book You will be making a children’s book to show the functions of the organelles in a cell. 2). 3D Cell Model You will be creating a 3-dimensional model to represent either a plant cell or an animal cell. 3). Visiting the Cell – Travel Brochure You will be designing a Travel Brochure that describes a plant or animal cell as if it were a real life attraction. 4). Cell Song You will be composing a song about the cells and its organelles http://www.beatricebiologist.com/2012/05/single-cell-is-just-fine-thank-you.html Due: Friday, November 2 Worth: 30% http://www.westerncenteracademy.com/uploads/9/3/8/2/9382043/cellular_structure_and_function_p rojects.pdf Cell Analogies Book 1. Choose either a plant or animal cell. Below are the organelles required to be included in your children’s book: ANIMAL CELL Cell membrane Cytoskeleton Cytoplasm Golgi Mitochondria Nucleus Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosome Lysosome Vesicle PLANT CELL Cell membrane Cell wall Cytoplasm Golgi Mitochondria Nucleus Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosome Chloroplast Vacuole 2. Select an everyday object that has a similar function as each of the cell organelles required in your chosen cell. 3. Write an analogy to show the similarity between each cell organelle and the everyday object. *YOU MUST INCLUDE YOUR JUSTIFICATION. (Ex. The nucleus is like a brain because it controls and coordinates the activities of the cell in the same way the brain controls and coordinates the activities of the body.) 4. Create a visual for your analogies. AN IMAGE OF THE SPECIFIC CELLULAR ORGANELLE IN QUESTION and AN IMAGE OF THE OBJECT SELECTED WITH SIMILAR FUNCTION. ***Remember this is a children’s book so it should be colorful and easy to read!!!*** 5. Here are the specific requirements: a. Front Page: needs to contain a multi-colored, hand-labeled picture of a plant or animal cell. Include your name. b. Page two: List all 10 of the required organelles and their corresponding functions. c. Contents: Each organelle with its analogy should have its own page. SCORING: Total of 30 marks Characteristic Correctly identified and labeled cell on the front cover (0.5 point for each of the organelles) List of organelles with corresponding functions on the second page (0.5 points for each organelle and function) Analogy for each of the cell organelles (1.5 for each of the organelles) Colorful visuals on each page (0.5 points for each visual) Score 5 marks 5 marks 15 marks 5 marks http://www.westerncenteracademy.com/uploads/9/3/8/2/9382043/cellular_structure_and_function_p rojects.pdf 3D Cell Model Project 1. Choose either a plant or animal cell. Below are the organelles required to be included in your model: ANIMAL CELL Cell membrane Cytoskeleton Cytoplasm Golgi Mitochondria Nucleus Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosome Lysosome Vesicle PLANT CELL Cell membrane Cell wall Cytoplasm Golgi Mitochondria Nucleus Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosome Chloroplast Vacuole 2. Create a 3-dimensional cell model. *YOU MAY USE ANY TYPE OF MATERIALS TO CREATE THIS MODEL – Styrofoam, string, cardboard, clay, beads, random everyday objects. * To view several examples go to: http://www.cwinstead.com/cells/3dcellexamples.html 3. Here are the specific requirements: a. All organelles must be labeled by using a key – you can use colors, numbers, or some other labeling mechanism. b. A list of all organelles with corresponding functions must be included SCORING: Total of 30 marks Characteristic Organelle key (0.5 points for each organelle) Organelle correctly shaped and positioned on model (2 for each of the organelles) Organelle functions sheet (0.5 points for each organelle) Score 5 marks 20 marks 5 marks http://www.westerncenteracademy.com/uploads/9/3/8/2/9382043/cellular_structure_and_function_p rojects.pdf Travel Brochure 1. Choose either a plant or animal cell. Below are the organelles required to be included in your brochure: ANIMAL CELL Cell membrane Cytoskeleton Cytoplasm Golgi Mitochondria Nucleus Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosome Lysosome Vesicle PLANT CELL Cell membrane Cell wall Cytoplasm Golgi Mitochondria Nucleus Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosome Chloroplast Vacuole 2. Accurately describe/paste/draw/explain the 10 organelles as attractions and justify how they have represented their functions. 3. Here are the specific requirements: a. Front cover includes student name, date, class period, as well as the attraction that is being used (i.e. amusement part, mall, etc.) b. Brochure includes the 10 specified organelles and their corresponding functions c. An organelle picture and a ‘real-world’ attraction picture should be included for each organelle. Ex. For creating a brochure for a shopping mall: SCORING: Total of 30 marks Characteristic Function for each organelle (2 points for each organelle) Picture representation of each organelle (0.5 points for each of the organelles) Picture of the “justified” real-world attraction (0.5 points for each organelle) Score 20 marks 5 marks 5 marks http://www.westerncenteracademy.com/uploads/9/3/8/2/9382043/cellular_structure_and_function_p rojects.pdf Cell Song 1. Choose either a plant or animal cell. Below are the organelles required to be included in your song: ANIMAL CELL Cell membrane Cytoskeleton Cytoplasm Golgi Mitochondria Nucleus Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosome Lysosome Vesicle PLANT CELL Cell membrane Cell wall Cytoplasm Golgi Mitochondria Nucleus Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosome Chloroplast Vacuole 2. Here are the specific requirements a) The song must mention 10 organelles and the function of each organelle. A list of the options for organelles b) The song MUST be appropriate, clean and accurate c) In addition to writing your song, you must also design the front and back CD cover. The front should have the name of your group, the members of the group, and some colorful image. The back should include the name of your song and the lyrics. NOTE: It is easy to Google and looked up every cell/organelle song out there, if you find one and attempt to pass it off as your own I will know. If so, you will receive a zero for this project. SCORING: Total of 30 marks Characteristic All organelles mentioned in song (0.5 points for each organelle) Correct function expressed for each organelle (1.5 points for each of the organelles) Front cover with name, members, image Back cover with name of song and lyrics Score 5 marks 15 marks 5 marks 5 marks http://www.westerncenteracademy.com/uploads/9/3/8/2/9382043/cellular_structure_and_function_p rojects.pdf
