This week’s meeting of the Wenatchee Downtown Kiwanis Club
opened with a brief tribute to Ron Russell who passed away this past
week. He was an active member and a regular attender until ill
health kept him from attending. He was president of our club in
1980. His southern drawl and ready smile will long be
remembered. Following this brief tribute Ken Buttel led in the
salute to the American flag and John Reichmann led the group in the
singing of an American patriotic song followed by “O Canada”, on
this last Tuesday of the month. Ron Yates gave the opening prayer,
including the tribute to Ron Russell.
The meeting got underway with the leadership of president Mel
Birmingham. Byron Moore introduced the guests and Tom Irvin
conducted the Lucky Dawg drawing with our Camp Fire leader,
Theresa Samuelsen winning the $5. There was no winner in the
yellow dice rolling so next week’s winner could go home with $50.
Joe Blackmore showed up un and willingly collected the Happy
Bucks. Retirement seems to be good for Joe. He looks great and
we appreciated his surprise visit. John Hook announced several
interclub meetings for the month of August. They include the
Division 52 Council meeting, this Thursday evening, August 1st, at
7 pm at the First United Methodist Church. YES, TOM, YOU ARE
INVITED AND WELCOME, TOO! On Wednesday, August 7th,
we will interclub with the Eastmont Club, at noon, at the Country
Inn in East Wenatchee. On Monday evening, the 12th, Cashmere,s
Wacoka Club meets at the American Legion at 6: 30 pm. Try to
attend one or more of these interclub meetings. The Wacoka Club
announced the death of Betsy Meade, this week. She was a charter
member of the Cashmere club and was on the threshold of 100
years. She was the mother and mother-in-law of Larry and Carolyn
Meade, also Kiwanians. Her memorial service is scheduled for
Saturday, September 7th, at the Cashmere United Methodist Church,
at 1: 30 pm.

Program
In the absence of Al Smith, Ernie Hobbs introduced our program for
today. Our speaker was Jeannie Kiehn of George who lives on an
acreage with her husband and four children and raises cattle. She
was born and raised on a cattle ranch at Hartline. Her family has
raised and shown cattle, horses, pygmy goats, sheep and hogs. She
has a special appreciation of the land and livestock and their
importance to life. She is very involved in 4-H and has been a beef
leader for 23 years. She majored in animal science at Washington
State University. She is proud to say that she has been a member of
___________________________________ the Washington State Cattle Women for 24 years and the American
National Cattle Women for the past four years. She is a proud
member of the National Beef Speaker’s Bureau. With the use of

Closing
IN CLOSING -
A prospective father-in-law asked, “Young man, can you support a
family?” The surprised groom-to-be replied, “Well, no. I was just
planning to support your daughter. The rest of you will have to fend
for yourselves.”
