Marriage isn’t often easy. Love is not often easy. Sometimes friendship between a man and a
woman is not easy. Maybe a man and a woman love or like each other, but they argue. They get
angry. What is the problem? Are men and women really very different?

Deborah Tannen says yes. Men and women are very different. Tannen teaches at Georgetown
University. She writes books about the differences between men and women. She believes that
men and women talk and think in different ways. She writes about some differences in her book
“You Just Don’t Understand.”

Bombay or so-called Mumbai is a city in the west coast of India, and many people know it as a
Gateway of India. Mumbai is one of the wealthiest cities in India because it is where the greatest
amount of money changes hands there. Most technological breakthroughs take place in Mumbai,
in India. Ships send out and receive more cargo in Mumbai than anywhere else in India.

Although Mumbai is not a big city, twenty million people live in the area. People speak many
different languages in Mumbai. Marathi is the most common language, but only one third of the
population speaks it. Other important languages are Gujarati, Urdu, and Hindi. English is the
language for business, trade, manufacturing, education and politics.

Mumbai offers a cosmopolitan and different lifestyle because of the migration of people from all
over India. Therefore, there are different activities people do. Cricket, soccer, and field hockey
are very popular sports. People also like the night life in Mumbai. In addition, they celebrate
both Western and Indian festivals. For example, the Banganga festival is a two-day music
festival in January. Because of this rich culture and many attractions for visitors including
museums, theatres, libraries, and galleries, Mumbai is one of the most important touristy places
in India.
