The Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) in partnership with the University of Cumbria is
offering an opportunity for a graduate or post graduate wanting to develop skills and
experience by working on an innovative GIS web-development project.
The Freshwater Biological Association (FBA), a registered charity and company limited by
guarantee, promotes the study and application of freshwater biology. Established in 1929, it
is the country’s foremost provider of freshwater information through membership services,
research support and information dissemination.
A key activity is managing digital environmental datasets for Defra, Environment Agency and
NGOs, using a library archiving standard along with attention to long term viability and
accessibility of open access data (including documents, images etc.).
The role will involve creating, implementing and exploiting a GIS-enabled, standardscompliant on-line recording tool for collating freshwater biological records for use by nonscientists. The post holder will also be required to investigate sustainable income streams
involving the newly developed tool.
This is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) appointment in which the candidate will
be supported in their role by University academics while working full-time at the Freshwater
Biological Association. The University of Cumbria will employ the post holder.
Essential:
Candidates should have a BA or BSc (2:1 or above) or post graduate degree in the area of
Computing/Business Studies with excellent web development skills. Good communication,
networking and interpersonal skills are required as well as the ability to work on your own
initiative and as part of a small team.
Desirable:
Experience of GIS and experience or interest in ecology and community engagement.

Job Purpose:

The post holder may be required to travel between the FBA Offices and the University. The
University makes use of videoconference facilities to minimise travel wherever possible.
Main Roles and Responsibilities:
Responsible to the Bioinformatics & Web-development Manager, your principal role will be to
interact with end-users to gather requirements as well as build on and maintain existing
systems. These currently include a variety of Drupal-based websites, most specifically the
Riverfly Partnership website. You will also be involved in the integration of these systems
with other components of the FBA information architecture. The principle aims of the current
project involve developing appropriate metadata standards compliant input tools and
integrating them into digital archive infrastructure already being developed at the FBA. In
addition to this you will develop GIS functionality to incorporate into the archive systems for
online biological recording interfaces; you will also be encouraged to become involved in
other FBA activities as appropriate.
