INVESTING IN COMMUNITIES Sacramento PROMISE ZONE In April 2015, Sacramento was designated by the White House and HUD as a Promise Zone, one of only eight cities nationwide. The Promise Zone, which covers specific areas in Sacramento, identifies communities with high poverty, high unemployment, and uneven access to health care. Organizations within Sacramento will receive priority funding opportunities for grants to fund services to residents in the Promise Zone. The Promise Zone partners have identified five goals to improve quality of life and accelerate community revitalization: Create Jobs Increase Economic Activity Improve Educational Opportunities Improve Health and Wellness Facilitate Neighborhood Revitalization Promise Zone Internship Corps California State University, Sacramento An Outstanding Opportunity to Serve the Sacramento Promise Zone To help facilitate efforts to serve the residents of the Promise Zone, SHRA has announced the availability of 7 internships, solely for Sacramento State students, beginning in early fall 2015 (see announcement and internship descriptions). Students selected to participate in the Sacramento Promise Zone Internship Corps will have the following responsibilities and award at the conclusion of their service as interns. Receive $500 upon successful completion of internship (from Office of Research Affairs) Receive Certificate jointly from Sacramento State and the agency/organization where internship was served Write two 2-3 page reflections on internship experience (due at the halfway point and the completion of the internship) o Describe how your activities impacted, or have the potential to impact, (a) residents of the Promise Zone, (b) the agency or organization hosting the internship, and (c) your own learning from this experience. Housing Development Internship (Junior or Senior preferred) - Under supervision, assist Development Department staff to carry out revitalization activities designed to provide affordable homeownership opportunities in neighborhoods throughout the City and County of Sacramento. Depending on abilities, assignments may include gathering data, creating marketing strategies and coordinating marketing campaigns, planning events, writing press releases, updating and tracking project status information, research, social media and online outreach, and other related administrative tasks. Specific projects will be assigned as needed. 2. Development Finance Internship (Junior, Senior, or graduate student preferred) - Under supervision, assist Development Finance Homeownership staff in processing applications for homeownership assistance programs and/or assist Development Finance Regulatory Compliance Monitoring staff in updating and maintaining the Agency affordable housing database. Depending on abilities, assignments may include research, tracking project status information, gathering and analyzing data, working with lenders and property management companies, social media and online outreach, and other related administrative tasks. Specific projects will be assigned as needed. 3. GIS Internship (Junior, Senior, or graduate student preferred) - Under supervision, assist Community Development Program Manager to carry out revitalization activities designed to provide support economic and community development opportunities in neighborhoods throughout the City and County of Sacramento. Depending on abilities, assignments will include gathering data, analyzing data, GIS/AutoCAD mapping, MS Word, Excel, Project, Access, and PowerPoint. Specific projects will be assigned as needed. 4. Promise Zone Communications Internship (Junior, Senior, or graduate student preferred) - Under supervision, assist Promise Zone team members to carry out revitalization activities designed to provide communication support between the partners engaged in the activities of the Sacramento Promise Zone. Depending on abilities, assignments may include gathering data, creating marketing strategies and coordinating marketing campaigns, planning events, writing press releases, updating and tracking project status information, research, social media and online outreach, and other related administrative tasks. Specific projects will be assigned as needed. 5. Youth Development Mentor Internship (Associates or Bachelor’s Degree required) - The Youth Development Mentor is responsible for carrying out tasks related to the activities of the Youth Development Academy and My Brother’s Keeper activities at Marina Vista, Alder Grove and Twin Rivers Housing Communities. Assist with various duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator and/or Director. Plan and coordinate youth activities and events throughout the year. Work with the local schools and service clubs to promote programs. Responsible for working with volunteers and youth to provide a positive experience for all. Other duties as assigned. 6 & 7. Video Production/Broadcast Internship (2 positions) (Junior, Senior, or graduate student preferred) Under supervision, assist Promise Zone team members to carry out revitalization activities designed to provide support economic and community development opportunities in neighborhoods throughout the City and County of Sacramento. Depending on abilities, assignments will include: Video production (lighting, audio production and editing) for posting online Research, write and develop video content based on the Promise Zone’s strategic priorities Conduct Interviews and document activities within the Promise Zone Create monthly segments for the agency’s website, other related duties as assigned or requested
