Soil Contamination BTSOC Hand in assignment H2 Introduction to soil contamination You are to produce one page that can be put on the wall in class with the characterisation of a toxic chemical. You are free to choose the chemical. It could be a substance that are found in wastewater, contaminated soil or elsewhere (a metal or an organic component). In your description include: 1) Name and chemical formula for the substance 2) Supplementary information about the chemical, e.g. polarity (KOW), water solubility, vapour pressure and KH (if volatile), major places of application or other relevant information characterising the chemical. 3) Toxicity and adverse effects. Information about the toxicity of the substance, e.g. LD50 levels, LC50, NOAEL levels or other information about the adverse effect of the substance (if not death which other adverse effects are associated with exposure to the substance?) You may refer to limit values for the substance in water (e.g. using EU drinking water directive http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:1998:330:0032:0054:EN:PDF ) or in soil (e.g. cf. the Finish Government Decree on soil contamination 214/2007 http://www.finlex.fi/en/laki/kaannokset/2007/en20070214 4) Optional: reference to a place (or case) where this substance has been part of a significant environmental problem. Make one page (A4 or A3) with the basic info you can find so this can be put up as poster in class. Document1 Page 1
