Session Q & A:
1. Is there a Moodle Mobile app and is the functionality turned on?
Yes, and the mobile app is now enabled for testing. Please send us any pertinent feedback you have
about it.
2. Is the time zone set correctly in Moodle?
Yes, the default time-zone is set to UTC-7 which is equivalent to PST. Individual users may also set
their own time zones manually.
3. Web Browser glitches.
Moodle should work on all major web browsers. It’s possible that you may experience difficulties
with Internet Explorer from the College until such a time it is updated to a newer version of IE.
(Which should be soon!) Any technical issues you experience as a result of a Web Browser should
be submitted to the Help Desk.
4. How does the “Online users” block work exactly?
“Online Users” block is tied to enrollees to that course and has one admin. setting that allows for
the number of minutes after which users will not be displayed in the list. The default is 5 minutes.
5. Is there a master list of files somewhere reflecting everything that instructors have uploaded to
their Moodle course, which they may access to refer to (and delete/add/edit)?
Files may be added per user to My Private Files (view by block) in the system. However, course and
private files may be accessed through the Add Activity - File Picker (recent, upload, private, Dropbox, or
Server files).

6. Will final grades in Moodle be pushed to banner, FAST or both?
We will have the ability to push to both Banner and FAST. The preference is to upload final grades
to FAST which will push to Banner
7. Is student tracking available in Moodle?
Yes, there are a variety of student tracking plugins available.
8. How can instructors get access to Panopto?
We will be posting detailed instructions in the Resources Module soon!
9. When we embed videos in Moodle using Panopto, are they viewable on all platforms?
Yes, the video streams are HTML 5 compliant (not Flash)
10. Cruiser has an online mid-course evaluation that is initiated by Admin. Staff to gather
anonymous feedback from students about their courses. Will something like this be available in
Moodle for the Fall 2015 Semester?
Yes, we will build this with the Moodle Feedback tool because it allows for anonymous responses
(unlike Questionnaire).
11. How do you show online videos from websites other than YouTube?
Use the same procedure as for YouTube Videos; The “Media” button, to embed the video.
12. What’s happening to Yukon College’s private YouTube channel?
Nothing right away, but if you have content on there we recommend you migrate it to Panopto.
13. Can instructors import their SoftChalk course into Moodle themselves?
Yes! It’s easy. There’s a guide under “More Resources”.
14. Can automatic email notifications be turned off for messages?
Yes. Generally such notifications are turned on/off via Settings block under My Profile settings –
Messaging.
15. Is there a way to delete a selected module?
Sort of; The (-) button at the bottom of your modules will remove the last module in the row. Simply
drag and drop the module you want to delete to the bottom of the list.
16. Is there a centralized place that instructors can upload/edit their syllabus and also make it available to
whoever needs the most recent copy of it?
Yes, this can be done in Soft Chalk. Please contact tlc@yukoncollege.yk.ca for more details on how to
do this.

17. When adding documents to an “Assignment” can you choose the order the document appear?
Yes, you should be able to.
18. Will students risk losing their work if they are typing responses in the online assignment areas due to
the system timing out?
The system will time-out, but work should be saved or cached and should display when the student
logs back in.
19. How far back does the “recent messages” block display?
This setting is determined by the site administrator. Typically 3-5.
20. Why isn’t the YouTube internal search option working in Moodle?
As of April 20th, 2015 this feature stopped working and is currently not available. Lambda is working on
a “patch” to get it working again.
21. Is there any kind of space limit on Panopto Cloud?
No
22. What is the maximum File upload limit for assignments?
It’s been set to 2GB.
23. When you copy a course within Moodle, do Gradebook settings transfer over? (Categories and
weight)?
Yes, depending on how much you copy over (course import). You may also copy a course’s gradebook
structure to other courses (template style) by backing up a course’s Activities, Resources, etc but not
include user data. Then restore as a new course and the Gradebook categories and weights etc. will be
copied over
24. Can the setting to “display in new window” be changed system-wide to be checked by default?
No, not easily.
25. Is there a plugin to be able to format text (size/style/colour) for the module names: Not that we’re
aware of. TLC is looking into this though.
26. Can the default positioning of Panopto and YouTube videos be made the same? No, not easily.
27. Can the formatting concerns around the built in rubric be adjusted on the Moodle side of things? TLC is
checking into Moodle’s style sheeting but this issue is typically the fault of the OS and/or particular
browser version. We will be able to make browser recommendations at a later date.
28. Is there a plugin for students to be able to view all of their assignments and quizzes in one place? Try
the “Activities” Block.

29. Where should instructors go for Lecture Capture Equipment? (Microphones/Cameras)
Ultimately, instructors should request equipment to be purchased for their department. At this time, there is
no system in place to loan this type of equipment to staff and no decisions have been made about where or
how such a service may be provided.
30. What Freeware can we recommend to students for view common file types on their home computers?
Open Office: https://www.openoffice.org
31. Will grades (final and interim) remain accessible and visible to the instructor after they’ve been
submitted in Moodle? Likewise, will instructors have access to their Moodle course after the official
“close date”? (as per Banner)? Or will we have to manually give them access to the closed course?
Grades will not disappear after the course close date. Instructors will have access to all term courses
and will be able to view the final grades entered into Banner FAST from a custom Moodle block we’re
now developing for Fall.
32. There are certain courses students can’t register in until (literally) the day the course starts. How can
students be given access to their online content while awaiting the registrar to register them in the
system? If we manually enroll a student for this reason, will it create duplicate enrollments in Moodle
for that student once the registrar also registers them? Or how will situations like this be addressed?
This is process question to be presented to the Registrar. Manual student enrollments in courses
before being pushed over from Banner will not be allowed. There could be unforeseen consequences
to manually enrolling users into a course before Banner attempts to enroll (may not be full overwrite
and prevent the enrollment) the person into the course.
33. Can we add a plugin so that instructors can format the text for the module names. (styles/size/fonttype/colour, etc)? Not available – determined by the plugin developer.
34. Can the positioning of embedded Panopto videos be centered? (Youtube videos Center themselves,
Panopto videos justify towards the right-hand side. It would be nice if they at least positioned
themselves the same way.) Panopto by default (code-wise) is written properly to be “centered". This is
an issue with Moodle’s handling of the code. This can only be altered by instructors in the html.
