THE JOHANNESBURG HERITAGE FOUNDATION Media Release 31 July 2015 Celebrate Johannesburg this Heritage Weekend – 19 and 20 September 2015 September is Heritage Month - why not celebrate Joburg’s exciting, and sometimes turbulent history on the weekend of the 19th and 20th of September with The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation! The Foundation will be running 15 walking tours across the city, catering for all tastes and interests, and four children’s tours, a book sale and tea garden at Holy Family College. Most excitingly, and to celebrate the Foundation’s 30th anniversary, we will be hosting the #heartheritage photographic exhibition in collaboration with Joburg Photowalkers. #heartheritage celebrates our City’s heritage and our love of capturing it, and is open on both Saturday and Sunday at Holy Family College. Explore the historic city centre, its magnificent architecture, fascinating social history and dramatic politics in tours of Newtown and of the Financial District. Marvel at magnificent views and the baronial homes that command our ridges in The Baker Tradition, Take the Plunge Down the Ridge, and Jubilee Road to Villa Arcadia. Delight in opulent interiors of beautifully restored landmarks on The View to Sunnyside Park, and Northwards. Discover remarkable personalities on Jeppe Celebrates 125 Years, Forest Town, and The Braamfontein Cemetery. Children are invited to join us in a beautiful Edwardian attic classroom and experience what school was like 100 years ago. Sit in old-style wooden desks and learn to write in cursive with dip pens, inkwells and blotting paper. Find out how children used to learn to read, and learn what a dunce cap was used for! Children’s tours cost R30. Heritage Weekend walking tours cost R50 per person, and depart from Holy Family College, Parktown. Holy Family College is situated at 40 Oxford Road, Parktown. Enter from Third Avenue or from Oxford Road. BOOKING FOR THE HERITAGE WEEKEND TOURS IS NOT NECESSARY, BUT BOOKINGS ARE LIMITED TO CAPACITY ON THE BUS.
