Guides Australia invites YOU to experience
a unique leadership development seminar
This is not just another event – this is a high level leadership and learning opportunity for women
aged 16 to 20, from each Australian State, as well as several international participants.
Leading Edge will be fun – you will be learning through exciting experiences!
It is a great opportunity for you to:







increase your leadership skills;
develop self confidence and boost your self esteem;
learn some practical skills to carry you through life;
enhance your problem solving and decision making skills;
work in a team and effectively lead a team;
build your enthusiasm and motivation, and expand your network of friends; and
leave inspired and ready to implement your Leader Skills Project.
LEADER SKILLS PROJECT
To help you gain the most from Leading Edge, you will be required to carry out a Leader Skills Project
after the event and before the end of December 2016. A Leader Skills Project is any long term task
that will require you to use the following skills;




goal setting
decision making
communication
time management
Most Leading Edge Projects will slot into one of three categories;



fundraising/ awareness raising
activity day/ weekend
resource development
Participants do not need to arrive at Leading Edge with a project although you might come with some
ideas. It is important that before you apply you consider your time commitments between July and
December 2016.
The Leader Skills Project is an opportunity to put into practice all that you will learn at Leading Edge.
As well as providing a valuable experience, it will be a useful addition to your CV.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
ELIGIBILITY:
All members of Girl Guides Australia aged from 16 to 20 at the time of the event
are eligible to apply for Leading Edge.
DATES:
Participants will arrive in the morning of Friday 1st July 2016 in time for the
lunch- the official program will commence on Friday afternoon. Participants will
depart either on Friday 8th July 2016 or on Saturday 9th July 2016 if they
choose to participate in an optional extra 1-day trip to Uluru.
VENUE:
Leading Edge 2016 will be held in Alice Springs, NT. Accommodation is in small
cabins at the local caravan park, with the event using the local Girl Guide hall.
FEE:
The $675 Event Fee includes: transport in the NT (detailed below); all meals
and accommodation; and all activities and materials associated with the
program. Personal travel costs to and from Alice Springs are not included in
the Event Fee. The optional 1-day trip to Uluru is also not included and will
approximately $200 extra.
TRANSPORT:
Participants can either be met at Alice Springs Airport and transported to the
accommodation, or may arrive at the event by private transport.
FINANCIAL
ASSISTANCE:
There may be financial assistance available, please don’t let the cost stop you
applying! Talk to your State Co-ordinator, who will be able to advise you of the
options that are available in your State.
APPLICATIONS:
The Application Form is a word document that consists of three parts:
1. Personal details, including a photo
2. About you; background information about your previous experiences and
why you would like to attend Leading Edge
3. Two referee statements.
The completed application must be submitted to your State Co-ordinator (Sam
Knight: program@guidesvic.org.au), at your State Office, by 5.00pm Friday
12th February 2016
SELECTION:
Each State will have its own selection process. This will take place during
February All applicants (regardless of whether or not they have been
successful) will be notified by Monday 29th February.
PAYMENT:
Payment is not required prior to selection. If you are selected a deposit of $325
will be due by Saturday 29 April, 2016. The balance of $350 will be due on
Tuesday 31 May 2016.
SPECIAL
NEEDS:
The Application Form asks you to nominate any additional needs, eg health or
dietary requirements, this is to assist the Planning Team; an example might be
you are vegetarian or require assistance with mobility. Post selection a more
detailed Health Form will be sent out.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
Thank you for your interest in Leading Edge 2016. The Application Form has three parts:
Part 1
Personal Details
Start with the easy stuff – personal details and contact information.
You also need to attach a passport or standard sized photo of yourself.
Your application needs to be endorsed by your Division or Region Leader/
Manager (or equivalent).
Part 2
About You
Answer a few questions about your background and previous experiences and
why you would like to attend Leading Edge.
Part 3
Two Referees Statements
You will need to obtain two Referee Statements. A Referee Package has been
put together to assist you referees to complete their statements.
Please ensure all three parts are completed fully and your references and photo are attached before
returning to your State Co-ordinator (Sam Knight: program@guidesvic.org.au) by 5.00pm Friday
12th February 2016.
