GENEALOGY 101: BEGINNER’S PACKET HANDOUTS
The Probate Court Marriage Record
Figure 1: Wedding Rings
Marriage records for Stark County, Ohio began in 1800. The first marriage records
contained only the bride’s name, groom’s name, officiate, and date of marriage. By the
1900s, marriage records contained all of the above information plus the parents’ names
of both parties as well as the church or court house they were married. Each state and
county has a different history. It is best to contact that state or county for details
pertaining to their records.
4. Take the Marriage Record for Irvine E. Kline out of the packet along with the blank
worksheet. Take a moment to review the record and note how the record is broken
down into three parts: groom, bride, officiate. Now answer the following questions:
a. How old is Irvin E. Kline at the time the application was completed?
b. What is Irvin E. Kline’s occupation?
c. What is the bride’s father’s name?
d. Who was the minister for the marriage?
e. What was the groom’s mother’s name?
When you have completed all parts of the packet take it up the Genealogy staff
member. They will remove only the worksheets, not the charts, group sheet, or
samples, for further review and give back the packet. Then the staff member will
answer any of your questions and assist you with using resources that may help you to
continue your research.
