The Greenwood Tower Club quarterly meeting was held on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 6PM at Cambridge Hall. The meeting was called to order by Mike McWhorter, president of Tower Club Greenwood. The agenda was dispersed. Minutes from the last Tower Club meeting were approved. Business Student Housing - As of August 22, 2011, there are three thousand seventy-nine (3079) students enrolled at Lander University. There is also a total of three hundred eighty (380) students housed in “Bearcat Village.” The group was informed by Jeff May that the Bearcat Shutter Bus is also operational at this time. Freshman “Move In”- Freshman “Move In” will take place on Saturday, August 27, 2011. More volunteers are needed to assist students and families with carrying items into dormitories, directing students to various areas of the campus, etc. Several Tower Club members will assist with this event. “Music Festival 2011”- The Greenwood Tower Club sponsored “Music Fest” will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at 5PM at the Cabana at Grand Harbor on Lake Greenwood. This event will take place “rain or shine.” The “Bearcat Daddies” will perform the music. All proceeds will benefit the John and Jane McElrath Music Scholarship and the Lander Alumni Scholarship Fund. As of today, thirty-five (35) tickets were sold and with seven hundred fifty dollars ($750.00) in sponsor donations. The group is anticipating great support for this event. The sponsors of this event are Gunnells’ Marine, Kat Finkbeiner, M&M Tire-Glenn and Debrah Miller, Drake, Drake and Associates, and Mark and Lori Holcombe. Last year the Music Fest raised one thousand nine hundred dollars ($1900.00). Expenses for this year’s event include approximately nine hundred eighty dollars ($980.00) for the food and an additional set-up fee for the band. Vietnam Memorial Wall - The Vietnam Memorial Wall will be displayed on Lander University’s campus on September 8-11, 2011. Tower Club Greenwood will sell soft drinks and water. Volunteers are needed to assist with this fundraising event. A Pepsi representative will be contacted by the Alumni staff to request usage of a Pepsi stand. Jeff May, Steve Grogan and the Lander University Alumni Staff will collaborate to ensure that student athletes assist with this fundraiser. Athletic Auction - The Bearcat Athletic Auction will be held on November 3, 2011. Ms. Shaffer informed the group that more items are needed for the auction. Members were encouraged to make donations. Charleston Fall “Get-a-way”- A Fall “Get-a-way” will be held on November 18-20, 2011 at The Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, SC. This will be a two night, weekend event that includes four star hotel accommodations, a catered private group dinner, cocktails, music, and plenty of fun. The accommodations cost for the trip will range from four hundred fifteen to four hundred fifty dollars ($415.00-$450.00). Freshman “Goodie Bags”- The group was asked to stay after the meeting to help stuff seven hundred twenty-eight (728) treat bags that will be given to freshman students during freshman “Move In.” Members present agreed to stay after the meeting as requested. Bearcat Membership - Mr. Steve Grogan provided Bearcat Club membership brochures to the group and encouraged members to join. He also asked members present to assist him with membership recruitment. He emphasized the importance of supporting the Bearcat Club which provides funding for scholarships, team travel, equipment purchases, and overall support for Athletes. As an added bonus for support, members will receive the new Bearcat Club automobile tag. For more information, the Lander University Athletic Department should be contacted by calling (864) 388-8314. Homecoming 2012- Plans for Homecoming 2012 will be discussed at the next Greenwood Tower Club meeting which will be held on January 16, 2012.
