Hale Drive, Mill Hill, London, NW7 3ED Tel: 020 8959 3423 Achieve Together, Learners Forever Issue 1 September 2013 Hello, Welcome back to school! I would like to welcome all our new children to the school, especially Year 3 who have settled in beautifully. We are all impressed with their great attitude to learning and junior school life. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PRIORITIES Our new improvement priorities for this year are… 1. MATHS - To embed a new approach to maths teaching and learning across the school and ensure our children have real life experiences of maths and problem solving 2. ASSESSMENT - To use high quality Assessment For Learning throughout the school to help to raise standards in English and maths 3. LITERACY - To ensure our children have experience of writing for a real purpose and work with real authors and poets 4. MORE ABLE- To ensure our more able children are identified quickly and encouraged to achieve their full potential through high quality teaching and learning opportunities 5. PARENT PARTNERSHIP -To raise levels of achievement across the school through seeking ways to engage parents in their children’s learning. We remain a good school with excellent staff, fantastic children and supportive parents. Working together we will continue to be successful in the future and ensure that all children reach their full potential. NEW STAFF - We have two new members of staff with us this year, Mrs Greig, our new Deputy Head and Mrs Lewis our new Welfare Manager. Miss Goodman and Miss Cooper got married over the summer and their new names are Mrs Juhasz (pronounced “You Haz”) and Mrs Harris. READING AT HOME - Perhaps the most important homework we need to do with our children is reading. We shouldn’t treat it as homework though, rather a great chance to spend some quality time with our children. Even Year 6 children enjoy sharing a book and reading aloud. If you want some advice about reading have a chat with your child’s teacher. MATHLETICS HOMEWORK CHALLENGE Remember all children have their own free logins to Matheltics and Spellodrome. I am challenging all children to achieve between 800 and 1000 points a week using Mathletics. Our monitoring of Pupil Progress has revealed that children achieving these levels of points each week, make significant improvements in their mental maths scores and overall levels, each term. We will publish our top 3 Mathletics students in each class in every newsletter. SCHOOL CLUBS and EXTRA ACTIVITIES Look out for the club letter for after school and lunchtime clubs on offer this term. In our school reception area parents can find a file with details of after school clubs and activities offered by Barnet and companies in the local area. Please feel free to have a look and take details. REMEMBER THE ONE WAY SYSTEM! - Let’s work together to make the journey to school a safe one! Parking and walking is a better way to start the day than struggling through traffic. ATTENDANCE AND TIMEKEEPING Please remember that school starts promptly at 8.55am and ends at 3.30pm. Please make sure your child is in the playground by 8.45am (for our soft start) School gates open at 8.30am. HOLIDAY REQUESTS - Parents have no right to remove their children from school for the purpose of a holiday. Parents may request permission for an absence in exceptional circumstances; a holiday is not considered an exceptional circumstance. This advice is based on the Education Regulations 2006 and amendment in 2013. Parents should be aware that failure to request leave of absence or defying the decision of a head teacher could lead to the issuing of Fixed-penalty Notices of up to £120 per parent per child. SCHOOL UNIFORM - We take great pride in our school and want all children to be in the correct school uniform all year.
