A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF GENDER NEUTRAL RESTROOMS ON CAMPUS

Whereas, the importance of protecting and providing inclusive facilities for all students at the
University of Nevada, Reno is imperative in order to fully accommodate all students;
Whereas, the University’s Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX’s Equal Opportunity and

Affirmative Action Statement reads, “The University of Nevada, Reno is committed to Equal
5
Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action in recruitment of its students and employees and does
6
not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, creed, national origin, veteran status,
7
physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, genetic information, gender identity, or gender
8
expression.”;

Whereas, the Associated Students of the University of Nevada believe that providing gender
2
neutral restrooms is essential to fulfilling the promise of our University’s Equal Opportunity and
3
Affirmative Action Statement;

Whereas, the University of Nevada, Reno currently has six restrooms on campus, located in the
5
Center for Molecular Medicine, the Jot Travis Building, the Joe Crowley Student Union, the
6
Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, the Thompson Building, and the DeLaMare Library, that could
7
be converted from family restrooms into gender neutral restrooms;

Whereas, multiple universities including Oregon State University, University of California, Davis,
9
University of Washington, and many others currently have gender neutral restroom facilities on their

campuses in order to create a more inclusive environment for all students;
Whereas, as we move forward into growing the university, our facilities should strive to be
inclusive to all regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression;
Be it resolved that, the Associated Students of the University of Nevada supports the signage
14
change of the six restrooms currently labeled as Family Restrooms, located in the Center for
15
Molecular Medicine, the Jot Travis Building, the Joe Crowley Student Union, the Mathewson-IGT
16
Knowledge Center, the Thompson Building, and the DeLaMare Library to be changed to Gender
17
Neutral.

Be it further resolved that, the Associated Students of the University of Nevada believes that gender
19
neutral restrooms should be available in future buildings for use to any person regardless of their
20
gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation.

Be it further resolved that, a copy of this resolution be sent to University President Marc Johnson,
Provost Kevin Carman, and Vice President of Student Services Dr. Shannon Ellis.
