In honor of the life of Senator William Raggio and his dedication to the
University of Nevada, the Nevada System of Higher Education, and the
State of Nevada
IN THE SENATE OF THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS
APRIL 27, 2012
MR. ZIAD RASHDAN, ON BEHALF OF THE COMMITTEE ON UNIVERSITY AFFAIRS,
SUBMITTED THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION
A RESOLUTION
In honor of the life of Senator William Raggio and his dedication to the
University of Nevada, the Nevada System of Higher Education, and the
State of Nevada

Whereas, Bill Raggio was one of Nevada’s strongest advocates for the
2
system of higher education, always putting the need for education
3
first;
4
Whereas, Bill Raggio has fought for the more disadvantaged students
5
in the state of Nevada, voting to pass the Undocumented Students and
6
Financial Aid Act;

Whereas, Bill Raggio served 38 years in the Legislature, making him
2
Nevada’s longest-serving Senator;
3
Whereas, Bill Raggio’s commitment to compromise reflected his
4
overall dedication to public service;
5
Whereas, Bill Raggio worked across party aisles with the Governor
6
and Teachers’ Union to form the Nevada Education Reform Act,
7
making education standards meaningful and more accountable for
8
Nevada;
9
Whereas, he served our country as a member of the United States
10
Navy Reserve, and soon became a Second Lieutenant of the United
11
States Marine Corps Reserve;
12
Whereas, he started his legal career in 1952 as Assistant District
13
Attorney for Washoe County, and held that position until 1958;
14
Whereas, he continued to serve Washoe County as the District
15
Attorney from 1958 to 1970;
16
Whereas, he served for 12 special and 19 regular sessions, the longest
17
Senate service in Nevada history;

Whereas, he was Chairman of the Legislative Committee on
19
Education from 1997 to 1999, and 2001 to 2003;

Whereas, Jason Geddes, Nevada Board of Regents chair said, Senator
21
William Raggio, “He served as an example for lifelong service to the
22
great state of Nevada and…distinguished Nevadan;”

Be it resolved by the Senate of the Associated Students, that
this body recognizes the life and achievements of Senator Raggio by

changing “The ASUN Senator of the Year Award” to “The William
2
Raggio ASUN Senator of the Year Award.”

Be it further resolved that a Bill accompany this resolution to
4
change the name of the ASUN Senator of the Year Award to The Bill
5
Raggio ASUN Senator of the Year Award.
6
Be it further resolved that the Senate of the Associated Students
7
continue in its efforts to encourage the administration of the
8
University to pursue Senator Raggio’s vision for higher education.
9
Be it further resolved that the Secretary of the Senate prepare
10
and transmit a copy of this resolution to the family of Senator Raggio,
11
Interim President Marc Johnson, Chancellor Klaich, Regent Geddes,
12
President Stiteler, Charlie Jose, Eli Reilly, Dr. Shannon Ellis, Matt
13
Smith, and Sarah Ragsdale.

Be it further resolved that a framed copy of this resolution be
displayed prominently in the College of Education, Dean’s Office.
