Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking Shelter Relief Staff PURPOSE OF POSITION Under the direction of the Shelter Program Coordinator, Relief Staff will oversee the operations, administration and provide client assistance at the CAST Shelter Program, as needed. Hours and days will vary. Relief Staff may be asked to work nights, weekends and/or holidays. This highly responsible position must maintain the high level of security and confidentiality required for this type of program. Relief staff must be able to intervene effectively in resident crises and conflicts, maintain detailed records and documentation to ensure the smooth operation of the shelter. Relief Staff will provide program and administrative support for daily operations and will work closely with the Shelter Program Coordinator and other shelter staff to create a community that is supportive of the changing needs of each individual resident. The position requires skills in conflict resolution and crisis intervention, as well as office administration, management, particularly for a social services organization. Candidates should possess high level of flexibility, maturity, and awareness of the dynamics of a shelter setting. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Resident Supervision: Provide support to shelter residents. Ensure that residents are adhering to shelter guidelines. Be available to respond to client questions and needs. Ensure that residents have access to household and personal supplies. Crisis Intervention: Independently assess and respond to client crises with a strengths-based, problem solving approach to sustain clients until appropriate staff members become available. Independently assess the need for external assistance, such as on-call staff member, and provide follow-up based on that assessment. Conflict Resolution: Manage and diffuse residents conflicts as they occur, document all incidents and continue to monitor resident relations. Communicate disputes and/or issues that require further intervention to Shelter Program Coordinator. House Management: Oversee daily operations of the shelter. Document any incidents, resident issues that arise throughout shift. Uphold policies and 1 procedures that contribute to the safety and confidentiality of the CAST Shelter Program. Hotline Services: Assist callers accessing the CAST’s 24 Hour Hotline Service. Other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS Bachelor of Arts or Science degree. Extensive experience and demonstrated skills and aptitude considered in lieu of education. Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Arabic, Amharic or SE Asian language preferred). Previous shelter experience preferred. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. A willingness and ability to learn about the complex issues of human trafficking and modern-day slavery and to abide by the mission and philosophy of CAST. Knowledge and understanding of immigrant and refugee rights and trafficking issues. Knowledge of and experience in supportive counseling, crisis intervention, and conflict resolution techniques. Ability and willingness to effectively intervene in and resolve resident disputes. Appreciation of sensitive confidentiality issues with demonstrated commitment to strengths-based, client-centered practice. Ability to maintain a positive, cooperative, and professional demeanor with clients, CAST staff/board, partner organizations, donors, consultants, volunteers/interns, and members of the public. Excellent communication skills with strong aptitude for building relationships. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. CA driver’s license with access to insured car (Good driving record a must).
