SPECIAL OBSERVANCES
WEEKLY READINGS and MASS INTENTIONS
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 27, 2013
The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not
rest until it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the
Most High responds.
— Sirach 35:17-18a
GOD’S LOGIC IS NOT OURS
Nobody will ever mistake the Bible for a logic
textbook. We need to remember this when we
approach today’s readings. How can a God who
knows no favorites have a chosen people, or give us
the disciplines of fasting and almsgiving and then
instruct us not to talk about them? God, in love and
tenderness, knows how quickly we can get “into a
rut.” The Spirit inspires passages like the instruction
from Sirach and the parable in Luke to help drag us
out of the rut of thinking that God’s ways are our
ways.
Sirach poetically uses contrast to answer the
question, “Whose prayer will reach the lofty clouds
of heaven?” The answer? Those who are lowly on
earth. Jesus amplifies this in his parable of the
Pharisee and the publican. It is Spirit-inspired illogic
that communicates today’s message: God hears the
voices of those who are ignored by the rest of the
world.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK FOR ADULTS
This Gospel reading suggests that we approach God
and each other with humility. What does this mean, in
practical terms? How do we "humble" ourselves?
What does that mean?
QUESTION OF THE WEEK FOR CHILDREN
Jesus teaches us to be humble – but what does that
mean? How do you show you are humble?

MASS SCHEDULE
Friday, November 1st
(Holy Day of Obligation)
Our Lady of the Sierra, Arnold 11:00am
St. Patrick’s, Angels Camp
6:00pm
From the desk of the Pastor
We have two people in today’s gospel who have come
to the temple to pray. The one thinks he will avoid
hell because he’s such a wonderful person; the other
throws himself on God’s mercy. This parable, like all
of Jesus’ parables, had a surprise ending that forces
us to think more deeply into God’s ways, which are
not our ways.
MASS SCHEDULE
Saturday, November 2nd
St. Patrick’s Murphys Cemetery 8:30am
Altaville Cemetery
9:00am
(The regularly scheduled 1st Saturday Mass will
be held at the Altaville Cemetery)
The Pharisee didn’t have much of a prayer. Jesus
said, “He spoke this prayer to himself.” He was
pretty much saying, “Thank you God that I am not a
sinner like everyone else—even like this tax
collector.” He seemed to show no attachment toward
God. His only attachment was to himself. The tax
collector, on the other hand, came to God for
forgiveness and he received it. The key word here is
“justified” which could be translated as “righteous.”
The tax collector went home justified, the other did
not. The Pharisee’s righteousness was of his own
making; he didn’t feel the need to ask God for
anything. The tax collector’s righteousness came as
an answer to a prayer: “God, be merciful to me a
sinner.” It reminds us that holiness is God’s gift to
those who are open to his grace. All through the
gospels, especially in St. luke, Jesus is eager to offer
his saving grace to anyone whose heart is open to it.
This does not eliminate the need to live a holy life, to
keep God’s laws, to pray and to do good for others.
This gospel tells us that the first step to holiness is to
humble ourselves before the Lord and ask for his
grace. God bless us.
