SPECIAL OBSERVANCES WEEKLY READINGS MASS INTENTIONS 5/25 Saturday: St. Bede the Venerable; St. Gregory VII; St. Mary Magdalene de’Pazzi; Blessed Virgin Mary The Most Holy Trinity May 26, 2013 5/26 The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. — Romans 5:5b SEEKING TO UNDERSTAND THE TRINITY If you sometimes find the Church’s teachings incomprehensible, be encouraged by today’s Gospel. Recognizing how bewildered his disciples have become, Jesus says, “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.” Then he promises that “the Spirit of truth” will come to make things clear. Even with the coming of the Spirit, we never fully understand. Today we hear the ancient poetry of the book of Proverbs, singing of God’s wisdom “playing on the surface of his earth,” delighting in humankind. We hear Paul boasting of his joy—not only in the blessings God sends, but even in “our afflictions.” Theologians wrestle with the mystery of the Trinity; with the help of the Spirit they make that divine mystery a little more clear to the Church. We understand a little. But mostly we listen, we pray, and we ask the Spirit for more clarity. 5/27 5/28 5/29 5/30 5/31 6/1 Readings Sir 17:1-15; Ps 103:13-18; Mk 10:13-16 Mass Intention: 4:00pm (AR) Fr. Opus Sanctorum Angelorum (“Work of the Holy Angels”) Three Day Mission June 24-26, 2013 St. Patrick’s Parish in Ripon (209-838-2133) Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Only our Catholic faith teaches us about the doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity. We believe that God is a mystery of three Divine Persons. Creation is attributed to God the Father, Redemption to Christ the Son, and Sanctification is of the Holy Spirit. In today’s feast we encounter the mystery of all mysteries, the mystery that underlies our faith and our entire spiritual life. The Trinity is a mystery too great for many people to accept. Many of us prefer to have a god whom we can understand. My personal thought, however, is that if God is someone I can completely understand, someone probably made him up. We should not be surprised that the God who made all things is greater than all the things he has created, including our human intellect. It was Tertullian, a Christian philosopher who was born about 115-120 years after Jesus died, who coined this word “Trinity” as he was trying to put into words the faith of the early Church about Christ. It was not an easy persuasion; there was bloodshed on this issue. People take their theology seriously. In the year 325 Constantine called the bishops together in what we call the Council of Nicaea to define the relationship between the Father and the Son, and later on the Council of Constantinople further clarified and expanded the Holy Spirit as the third person of the Blessed Trinity. What bound them together is the love of each other to each other. The blessed Trinity is the inner life of God and it is only up to that point that we can approach God in its wonder. Opus Sanctorum Angelorum is a canonically erected association of the faithful approved by and faithful to the Magisterium. It is under the overall direction of the Order of Canons Regular of the Holy Cross. Besides the general teachings on the spiritual life, the Opus Angelorum has the special mission to promote the awareness of the powerful presence and help of the Holy Angels in our spiritual lives. For more information visit the website: www.opusangelorum.org. 2nd Collection Next Weekend Next week our Parish will take up the Collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). This Collection communicates the Good News through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through podcasts, television, radio and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our diocese, so please be generous in this Collection. CCC is how the Good News gets around to you. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast, extending a dimension of Easter joy into Ordinary Time, reminds us that every aspect of worship centers on the mystery of God in three persons. At baptism, we are initiated into Christ and the Spirit. The Creed we recite at Mass every Sunday has its roots in the ancient celebration of baptism when a new believer was questioned at the edge of the waters of the font with three questions: Do you believe in God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit? Three questions, three affirmations, three immersions into the saving waters. Because every liturgy abounds with references to the Trinity, not only in words but in blessings by the sign of the cross, this feast was not easily accepted into the calendar. Pope Alexander in the eleventh century remarked that the liturgy is so laden with praise of the Trinity that there was no need for a special feast. Two hundred years later, while in exile in France, Pope John XXII proclaimed the feast, but it was not until 1911 that Pope St. Pius X gave it status as a solemnity. A favorite image in art for today is the Icon of the Trinity, showing three glorious winged men seated at a table laden with bread and a cup of wine. It recalls Abraham’s hospitality to angels and gives expression to the inner life of God, a life lived in relationship, a life poured out in abundance whenever Christians gather at the table of the Eucharist to give praise to the Father, in Christ, in the embrace of the Spirit.
