Resolution: Adoption of the policy paper entitled "Improving Healthcare for LGBTQ
Populations"
WHEREAS the CFMS has no position paper on the state of healthcare for LGBTQ
patients;
WHEREAS LGBTQ patients have unique health issues, risks, and concerns;
WHEREAS LGBTQ patients continue to be marginalized in Canadian society, and a growing
body of evidence demonstrates that LGBTQ patients disproportionately encounter
discrimination, invasive and insensitive questions, postponement of care, and clinicians
with inadequate knowledge of their unique challenges and realities;
WHEREAS research has shown that education specifically addressing the medical needs of
LGBTQ patients is necessary, yet currently inadequate;
WHEREAS the roles of the National Officer of Reproductive and Sexual Health (NORSH) and
Local Officers of Reproductive and Sexual Health (LORSHs) are expanding to advocacy and
educational workshops;
WHEREAS the adoption of such a position paper would allow the NORSH, LORSHs and
all Canadian medical students to advocate on this issue;
WHEREAS the adoption of such a position paper would allow the CFMS to release a formal
statement when the issue is brought up in the future;
BIRT the CFMS adopt the position paper “Improving Healthcare for LGBTQ
