Parents and StudentsWelcome to the 2015-2016 school year! I hope you all had restful summer. I look forward to a great year with my students. We will be reading Independent Reading novels at our own reading level (Lexiled), reading Lexiled articles and writing responses on computer-guided lessons, and working in small groups on specific skills. I encourage students and parents to frequently visit my class web page (https://www.killeenisd.org/teachers/index.cfm?param1=20353). It contains links to my syllabus, current handouts (available for downloading), and other useful information. Additionally, assignments will be made through Schoology, an online learning environment provided by KISD and linked to the online grade book. I highly encourage my students and their parents to sign up for Remind text alerts. This provides you a way to receive reminders about homework and other class related information without me knowing your cell phone number. I will not “blow up” your phone with texts. I will send out messages before homework is due and several over a period of time about major projects. This information about how to sign up for Remind alerts is available on my KISD web page (https://www.killeenisd.org/teachers/index.cfm?param1=20353). Each student will need the following supplies for class: Ink pens – blue or black ink Pencils – wooden or mechanical Notebook paper – loose leaf or spiral notebook Binder/folder – for current and returned work I am looking forward to seeing parents at our open house at Ellison High School on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Chandler Cox EHS Reading Where Eagles soar! Reading Class Policies Please read them and review them with your students. After reviewing them, please sign and return the back copy. 1. Students are now in high school and will be treated accordingly until they prove they cannot be. Students are responsible for their own behavior and will be given an opportunity to correct misbehavior before their parents are contacted unless it is severe. 2. Students must be considerate of and not interfere with other students’ learning. The Reading Lab is also the Dyslexia Lab. A calm, quiet environment is essential to learning these skills for all students. 3. Students are permitted one restroom pass per grading period. There is no requirement for this. Use this judiciously. We are in a portable quite a distance from the nearest restroom. You will miss quite a bit of class to use the restroom. Plan your restroom breaks like you will need to plan stops at your locker. Some classes are too far apart to take a restroom break or make a stop at your locker between them. Do it another time. 4. Students will not be permitted to leave class to go to their lockers. Bring your materials with you. We’re in a portable, quite a distance from any lockers. 5. Homework is due at the beginning of class the day it is due unless otherwise specified. Work not submitted at the time it is due is late work. 6. No late work will be accepted beyond that due to absence or to meet accommodations or modifications as required. 1. I drop the three lowest formative grades. This protects a student who inadvertently leaves an assignment at home, in their locker, etc. from a zero for an honest mistake. 2. We review some assignments in class so students may get timely feedback on their work in order to improve on the next assignment. When students do not turn in their work on time, they miss the review, they get the answers during the review, or I must delay the review for everyone until students submit their work late. This is not fair to the students who turn in their work on time. 7. Students must read their Independent Reading books outside of class (i.e.: homework), and make appropriate reading journal entries. 1. Students need to read a minimum of 20-30 minutes and make a reading journal entry four evenings each week. (This is in addition to what the students read in class.) 2. I suggest three school nights and once on the weekend, but how you do this is up to you, so long as it gets done each week. 3. Parents please sign the reading journal entries completed at home verifying the student completed the assignment at home. 8. Tutoring will be offered after school Tuesday-Thursday 4:15 – 4:45 PM. There will not be tutoring on early out days. Tutoring can be coordinated for before school on an individual basis. ______________________________________ Student Signature ______________________________________ Parent Signature Reading Class Policies Please read them and review them with your students.
