2014 Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships King’s College London would like to invite applications to the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship scheme. Each year the four Arts and Sciences Schools support a limited number of applications. Those who are successful will join a vibrant community of postdoctoral research fellows at the College who have been supported through this and other external and internal competitions in recent years. The College is fully committed to supporting the scholarship and career development of these fellows who will each be assigned an academic mentor and will be fully integrated into the life of the Department. Internal selection process The College operates a two stage internal selection process. Each Department has been allocated a quota of candidates who they are able to put forward for final selection by Heads of Schools and VP Arts and Sciences. The timeline for this selection process is set out below: Date/ Deadline Now – 17 January 2014 12pm on Friday 17 January 2014 17 – 27 January 2014 12pm on Monday 27 January 2014 27 January – 6 February 2014 Friday 7 February 2014 12pm Thursday 20 February 2014 20 – 27 February 2014 12pm Thursday 27 February 2014 4 pm on Thursday 6 March 2014 Action The call officially opens on 2nd January 2014, however applicants should start preparing their application before this date as application material has already been published (http://www.leverhulme.ac.uk/funding/ecf/ecf.cfm ). Applicants should submit applications to the relevant Head of Department. Heads of department (or nominated lead) assess applications and choose applicants (within quota) to put forward. Heads of department forward selected applications (within assigned quota) to researchofficestrand@kcl.ac.uk with the chosen applications ranked and with a brief summary of the reasons for support , a brief summary of how the selection process was made and a brief summary of the source of matched funding. Departments make applicants aware of their decision. VP Arts & Sciences and Head of Schools assess nominated applicants and make final decisions on applications to go forward to the LT. Applicants made aware of final decisions and successful applicants are given feedback and invited to make full applications online: https://grants.leverhulme.ac.uk/Login.aspx Applicants should make referees aware that they will need to provide referee statements at this point. Successful applicants submit their forms online (at which point it goes to the Head of Department to complete their section of the form). Applicants also complete and send RGA form to the School Research Development Manager for approvals. Head of Department completes section of form with details about the relevance of the applicant’s research to the department, the facilities and resources the applicant will have access to, the applicant’s starting salary, and the source of the matching funding. Head of Department submits to the Research Grants and Contracts Pre Award Office for institutional approval having completed nomination statement for candidate. Leverhulme application deadline. Institutional approval given by this date. Note that Institutional approval is required both from the head of the host department and from the relevant Research Grants and Contracts Pre Award Associate on behalf of the host institution. Nominated referees will also be required to provide their references via the on-line system. End May 2014 Decisions communicated to applicants by the Trust If you are interested in applying you should: Read the full details for the scheme at the Leverhulme Trust’s website and ensure that you are eligible to apply. Make contact with your chosen host Department as soon as possible. You should make contact with an academic member of staff closest to your area or the Head of Department and ask if they will advise you on your application and act as your mentor if you are successful. Unsupported applications will not be considered. Candidates must submit their application for consideration by Departments by 12pm on Friday 17 January 2014. Applications should be submitted to the relevant Head of Department. They will refer you for further advice if necessary to the College’s Arts & Sciences Research Office (see contact details at the end of this document). An application for each candidate must include the following information (we recommend that you use Arial font size 11) 1. Eligibility Confirmation Date of doctoral viva or anticipated date (Only candidates who have submitted their doctoral thesis by 6 March 2014 will be eligible, unless there are special circumstances such as a career break, maternity leave, illness or carers leave which can be documented.) Current employment details and career history. Please include details of your current salary. (Applicants must not yet have held a full-time established academic post in a UK University) Evidence of association with UK academic community (Applicants must hold a degree from a UK HEI, or at the time of application must hold an academic position in the UK (e.g. fixed term lectureship/ fellowship)) 1. Academic track record CV (2 pages maximum to include publications) 2. Research record and plans, to include: Title Abstract written in non-specialist language (250 words) Details of current and past research (250 words) Proposed research project (2 pages): This should include aims, objectives, methodology and outcome (e.g. publication plans). Include any bibliographic references in full, including page numbers where relevant. This statement and the bibliographic references may not exceed two sides of A4. The Department will then select which applications to put forward (within an agreed quota) an agreed quota of applications which will be submitted to the Arts and Sciences Research Office by 12pm on Monday 27 January 2014. They will be in a ranked list with a brief statement for each candidate outlining the reasons for support, an explanation of how the selection process was made and an explanation of the source of the matched funding. The Department will make applicants aware of the decision at this stage of the process. Final submission process Final decisions will be communicated to all applicants by the Arts & Sciences Research Office by Friday 7 February 2014 and those selected to go forward should finalise their application in consultation with their mentor or Head of Department. In order to make a final application you should: Read the online application instructions at the Leverhulme Trust’s website. Complete the application form online (https://grants.leverhulme.ac.uk/Login.aspx) If you have not already done so, contact your three referees as soon as possible to make arrangements for them to submit their statements online. Seek support from your Host Department in completing the section of the application which asks you to describe research relevant to your proposal that is being carried out in the host Department. Confirm start date and details of your current or most recent salary if you have held a temporary research or teaching post to the pre-award team in Research Grants and Contracts (see contact details at the end of the document). Complete an RGA form for internal approvals to be confirmed (this can be downloaded here: https://internal.kcl.ac.uk/innovation/support/grants/rgforms.aspx . If you cannot access this form please contact the ASRO or RG&C (details below) to send you a copy. In order to give the Head of Department and the College time to give institutional approval to your application, chosen applicants must submit their online application by 12pm Thursday 20 February 2014. At this point you and the Head of Department will receive notification from the Leverhulme’s online system. The Heads of Department had been asked to approve the applications (see below) by 12pm Thursday 27 February 2014 at the latest. The College’s Central Research Grants & Contracts office will then need to provide institutional approval for the application before the Leverhulme’s deadline of 4 pm Thursday 6 March 2014. If your Head of Department is not able to approve the application between 20-27 February, s/he will contact you directly to agree an earlier mutually convenient timescale. Once the application has been given full institutional approval and been submitted, you will receive an email from the Leverhulme’s online system confirming this. The Trust will report results to applicants by the end of May 2014.
