Section 1 words

Weather: The state of the atmosphere with respect to wind, temperature, cloudiness, moisture, pressure, etc.

Meteorology: The study of weather.

Meteorologist: A scientist who studies weather.

Solar Radiation: The heating of the earth’s surface by the sun.

Atmosphere: The air that surrounds earth.

Altitude: The vertical distance above or below sea level.

Troposphere: The lowest layer of the atmosphere where all weather occurs.

Ozone Layer: This layer of gases, in the upper Stratosphere, protects us from the Sun’s unltraviolet light rays.

Greenhouse Effect: The warming of the Earth as a result of gases in the atmosphere that prevent some of the Sun’s heat from being reflected back into space, thus creating a problem for us and the next generation, Global Warming.

Hydrosphere

: All of the earth’s water found underground, on the surface, and in the air.

Climate: The average weather pattern of a region.

Climatology : The study of how climate regions form, persist, and change.

Forecast: To predict the weather; a weather prediction.

Humidity: The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere.

Hygrometer : an instrument used to measure humidity or amount of moisture in the air.

Wind: Air in natural motion, air that moves horizontally.

Wind/Weather Vane: An instrument that points in the direction from which the wind is blowing.

Anemometer: A weather instrument that measures wind speed.

Latitude: A measure of distance from the equator. The equator is at 0` latitude, the North Pole is at 90` north, and the South Pole is at 90` south.

Longitude : The lines running vertically around the Earth. These lines are called meridians, and measure how far east or west an object is.

Air pressure: Tthe pressure exerted by the atmosphere.

Barometer: An instrument that measures atmospheric pressure.

Isobar: A line on a map connecting places with equal air pressure.

Temperature: The degree of hotness or coldness of something measured using a thermometer, usually in the Fahrenheit, Celsius, or Kelvin scales. It is measured by degrees.

Thermometer: An instrument used to measure the temperature. They have a special liquid inside them that moves in an encased tube with numbers on the outside. The top line of the liquid lines up with a number. That number is the recorded in degrees.
