Section 1 words
Weather: The state of the atmosphere with respect to wind, temperature, cloudiness, moisture, pressure, etc.
Meteorology: The study of weather.
Meteorologist: A scientist who studies weather.
Solar Radiation: The heating of the earth’s surface by the sun.
Atmosphere: The air that surrounds earth.
Altitude: The vertical distance above or below sea level.
Troposphere: The lowest layer of the atmosphere where all weather occurs.
Ozone Layer: This layer of gases, in the upper Stratosphere, protects us from the Sun’s unltraviolet light rays.
Greenhouse Effect: The warming of the Earth as a result of gases in the atmosphere that prevent some of the Sun’s heat from being reflected back into space, thus creating a problem for us and the next generation, Global Warming.
Hydrosphere
: All of the earth’s water found underground, on the surface, and in the air.
Climate: The average weather pattern of a region.
Climatology : The study of how climate regions form, persist, and change.
Section 2 words
Forecast: To predict the weather; a weather prediction.
Humidity: The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere.
Hygrometer : an instrument used to measure humidity or amount of moisture in the air.
Wind: Air in natural motion, air that moves horizontally.
Wind/Weather Vane: An instrument that points in the direction from which the wind is blowing.
Anemometer: A weather instrument that measures wind speed.
Latitude: A measure of distance from the equator. The equator is at 0` latitude, the North Pole is at 90` north, and the South Pole is at 90` south.
Longitude : The lines running vertically around the Earth. These lines are called meridians, and measure how far east or west an object is.
Air pressure: Tthe pressure exerted by the atmosphere.
Barometer: An instrument that measures atmospheric pressure.
Isobar: A line on a map connecting places with equal air pressure.
Temperature: The degree of hotness or coldness of something measured using a thermometer, usually in the Fahrenheit, Celsius, or Kelvin scales. It is measured by degrees.
Thermometer: An instrument used to measure the temperature. They have a special liquid inside them that moves in an encased tube with numbers on the outside. The top line of the liquid lines up with a number. That number is the recorded in degrees.
