A HOMESTEAD HOUSE CHRISTMAS The Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum Saturday, December 12th The Homestead Museum is "about" many things! Most importantly, it's a place to explore the history of the Los Angeles region from 1830 to 1930 in hopes of better understanding the past and people's ability to shape history. The six-acre site features the Workman House, an 1870s country home constructed around an 1840s adobe built by William and Nicolasa Workman; La Casa Nueva, a 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival mansion noted for its architectural crafts, and El Campo Santo, one of the region's oldest private cemeteries, containing the remains of Pío Pico, the last governor of Mexican California, and many other prominent pioneer families. We will learn about how the celebration of Christmas changed from the 1840s through the 1920s as we tour the museum’s decorated historic houses and meet some colorful characters along the way. The exterior of the mansion, with its tiled roof and garden patio centered by a large fountain is similar in design to the Franciscan chain of missions constructed in California during the 18th Century. The interior is furnished with fine wood carvings, stained glass windows, intricate iron work and colorful ceramic tiles. However, it is the living room that captures one's immediate attention in the holiday season with it’s beautifully decorated Christmas tree. We depart Ventura at 9:30am, with pickups in Camarillo and Thousand Oaks, to arrive at The Homestead House for a noon tour followed by a picnic lunch (included) and time on our own to shop and/or site see before our departure for Ventura County at 3:30pm.
