Software Activity: Listening to and Practicing Difficult Consonants
Step One:
Review the chart on the following page and pay attention to the sounds that give you trouble.
Circle 6 to 8 sounds that give you trouble.
Step Two:
Open up the Pronunciation Power program on a computer (click on ESL
Programs/Pronunciation/Pronunciation Power) and listen to the sounds that you have chosen. Pay particular
attention to the position of the teeth, tongue, and shape of the lips.
Step Three: Go to the following website: http://evaeaston.com/pr/consonants.html . When you click on a
sound on the chart, several words appear. Practice pronouncing each of the words with a tutor. Ask a tutor
to help you with the pronunciation of more difficult sounds and check the position of your lips and tongue. If
you are having difficulty with any of the sounds, use your class textbook and work on consonants that are
giving you trouble. (This may take more than one visit to the success center.)
