SPATIAL JOURNAL
Task Overview:
The purpose of this journal is to develop your spatial knowledge related to issues being explored throughout this
course. Since much of the issues you will learn about are interdisciplinary, this tool will help you think and
approach problem-solving like a geographer. Specifically, it will have you explore issues by exploring 3 questions:
What is Where?
Why There?
Why Care?
In each unit, you will complete 1 to 3 spatial journals. Your best 5 journal entries will be evaluated. ALL spatial
journals should be completed on a map (paper or digital) and should include the following headings:
1. What is Where?
WHAT = provide a brief overview of issue (i.e. WHAT is happening?)
WHERE = identify WHERE (i.e. location(s)) issue is taking place (scale: local, regional, global).
2. Why There?
Identify the location features (i.e. physical/human) that are causing the issue to take place in that
location.
3. Why Care?
Identify the importance or relevance of the issues to humans/earth. Why should be concerned about
this issue?
